If X is true, Y is necessarily true, and if X is false, Y may be true or false. For example, the sentence “He has been to France” entails “He has been to Europe”. 2 Concordance【答案】 The computer has the ability to search for a particular word , sequence of words , or perhaps even a part of speech in a text. The computer can also retrieve all examples of a particular word. It can also calculate the number of occurrences of a certain word so that information on the frequency of the word may be gathered. We may also be interested in sorting the data in some wayfor example, alphabetically on words occurring in the immediate context of the word. This is usually referred to as concordance. 3 division of pragmatic labor【答案】 Horn observes that the Q-based and R-based principles often directly collide and suggests the resolution comes from a division of pragmatic labor, which reads “The use of a marked (relatively complex and/or prolix) expression when a corresponding unmarked (simpler ,less “effortful”)alternate expression is available tends to be interpreted as conveying a marked message (one which the unmarked alternative would not or could not have conveyed) . 4 Contextual meaning【答案】 It is also called speaker?s meaning, or utterance meaning, which is more closely related to the context. For example, when a person says “My bag is heavy”,what he actually means may be asking the hearer to help him carry the bag. 5 Textual function【答案】 Textual function : The textual function is one of the three meta-functions language is composed of. It refers to the fact that language has mechanisms to make any stretch of spoken or written discourse into a coherent and unified text and make a living message different from a random list of sentences. 6 Duality【答案】Duality refers to the fact that in all languages so far investigated there are two levels of structure or patterning. At the first , higher level , language is analyzed in terms of combinations ofmeaningful units ; at the second, lower level, it is seen as a sequence (such as morphemes, words etc.)of segments which lack any meaning in themselves, but which combine to form units of meaning. For example , a syllable is the smallest unit that is normally spoken by itself, and scores of syllables become the carriers of hundreds of meaningful segments of words that are called morphemes. 7 The Innateness Hypothesis【答案】 The innateness hypothesis was proposed by Chomsky. It says that the ability to acquire a human language is part of the biologically innate equipment of the human being, and that an infant is bom with this knowledge of basic grammatical relations and categories, and this knowledge is universal.8 IC analysis【答案】 IC analysis: IC analysis (immediate constituent analysis) refers to the analysis of a sentence in terms of its immediate constituents-word groups (or phrases ) , which are in turn analyzed into the immediate constituents of their own , and the process goes on until the ultimate constituents are reached.
