After spending the evening drinking with his boss, he returns home to find his wife Joanna in the process of leaving him. Ted is left to raise their son Billy by himself. Ted and Billy resent each other as Ted no longer has time to carry his increased workload, and Billy misses the love and attention he received from his mother. After many months of unrest, Ted and Billy begin to cope with the situation and eventually grow to deeply love and care for one another.,After a year after, Joanna returns to New York in order to claim Billy, and a custody battle ensues. During the custody hearing, both Ted and Joanna are unprepared for the brutal character assassinations that their lawyers unleash on the other. Eventually, the courts awards custody to Joanna. On the morning that Billy is to move in with Joanna, she comes to the apartment and tells Ted that, while she loves Billy and wants him with her, she knows that his true home is with Ted.,Conflict,Inner conflicts Ted: a strong dedication to career; confused about how to choose-career or family Joanna: feels confined in her role as a housewife; loves Billy but to leave him to find herself Conflicts between people Ted and Billy: lack of communication and interaction Ted and Joanna: different positions in a family-a workaholic father and a housewife; divorce and fight in court for Billys custody Ted and his boss: Ted was scolded by Jim OConner for his negligence because he takes care of Billy,Conflicts of ideas Personal career, hope and pursuit contradict a marriage life How to adjust the roles and thought of a man and a woman in a family Whether understand the need of a real family and the respect for a marriage relationship or not How to realize womens rights as men and how to protect their own independent personalities and pursuits of the meaning of life,Joanna and society Womens role was to seek fulfillment as wives and mothers in America for centuries. The society defined a wonderful woman as a housewife. Joanna tried to find herself and redefined her real role in a family and society, thus a image of Women Liberation Movement. Ted and society It was hard to let go of the idea that success is defined as success at work versus doing a good job as a father-that is daddy stress. To be a workaholic man or a good father is a big issue faced by Ted. A family and society A man has responsibility to earn money to raise a family normally, thus Ted neglects his family and has conflicts with Joanna naturally.
