,Carl Sandburg,Life Carl August Sandburg (January 6, 1878 July 22, 1967) was an American poet, writer, and editor who won three Pulitzer Prizes普利策奖, two for his poetry and one for his biography of Abraham Lincoln(亚伯拉罕林肯). During his lifetime, Sandburg was widely regarded as “a major figure in contemporary literature“, especially for volumes of his collected verse, including Chicago Poems (1916), Cornhuskers内布拉斯加州居民(1918), and Smoke and Steel 烟与钢 (1920).,Biography Sandburg was born in the three-room cottage at 313 East Third Street in Galesburg, He adopted the nickname “Charles“ or “Charlie“ in elementary school, at about the same time, he and his two oldest siblings changed the spelling of their last name to “Sandburg” At the age of thirteen he left school and began driving a milk wagon. From the age of about fourteen until he was seventeen or eighteen, he worked as a porter at the Union Hotel barbershop in Galesburg.After that he was on the milk route again for eighteen months.,He then became a bricklayer and a farm laborer on the wheat plains of Kansas.After an interval spent at Lombard College in Galesburg, he became a hotel servant in Denver(丹佛), then a coal-heaver in Omaha. He began his writing career as a journalist for the Chicago Daily News. Later he wrote poetry, history, biographies, novels, childrens literature, and film reviews. Sandburg also collected and edited books of ballads(民谣) and folklore(民间传说). He spent most of his life in the Midwest before moving to North Carolina(北卡罗莱纳州).,Works Much of Carl Sandburgs poetry, such as “Chicago”, focused on Chicago, Illinois, where he spent time as a reporter for the Chicago Daily News and the Day Book. His most famous description of the city is as “Hog Butcher for the World/Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat麦堆/Player with Railroads 铁路玩家and the Nations Freight Handler全国货物管理者,/Stormy, Husky, Brawling, City of the Big Shoulders.“,Sandburg earned Pulitzer Prizes for his collection The Complete Poems 诗歌全集 of Carl Sandburg, Corn Huskers, and for his biography of Abraham Lincoln (Abraham Lincoln(亚伯拉罕林肯).: The War Years). Two years later his book Chicago Poems was published, and the thirty-eight-year-old author found himself on the brink of a career that would bring him international acclaim.,Sandburgs experiences working and traveling greatly influenced his writing and political views. He saw first-hand the sharp contrast between rich and poor, a dichotomy that instilled in him a distrust of capitalism.,Comment,The poem presents a striking and impressive description of the vigor and vitality of Chicago primarily by means of personification, images and metaphor.,In the first five lines, Chicago is compared to “hog butcher“, “tool maker“, “stacker of wheat“, “Players with railroads“, “the National Freight Handler“ and “the Big Shoulders“, all of whom are powerful and vigorous. By using this metaphor. The poet highlights the vigor of Chicago.,In the next 13 lines, the poet agrees that Chicago is wicked, crooked and brutal in a straightforward way by assuming a talk between the poet and the personified city, but he goes on to develop the theme of the poem by stating that Chicago is “alive and coarse and strong and cunning“.,It notice that the poet conforms the language style of the conveyance of the theme. One eye-catching characteristic of the poem is that verbs take up a very high proportion and therefore create in the readers mind a sense of mobility and vitality. Moreover, the varied syntactic pattern and changeable rhythm also reveal the mobility, energy, and vigor of Chicago,Carl Sandburgs poem “Chicago“ defends the city against dark accusations of prostitution, poverty, and exploitation of the working class.
