Characters, plot, setting.Film NarrativeIntroductionn The narrative style of a film is very similar to that of novelsn Some differences:n You watch a film, not read it. Detailed descriptions in a novel = detailed audio/visuals in a film. This may include music, lighting, editing, camera angles among other things.n A novel can explain what a person is thinking. In a film, it must show it through the actors dialogue, body language and occasionally musicStructure of a Filmn Nearly identical to the structure of novelsn Think: How, When, Why, What, Who, Where1. Exposition 2.Rising Action 3.Climax 4.Falling Action 5.Denouement (Resolution)Expositionn Introduces the characters, setting, and moodn Answers “who,” “where,” “when.”n Has a hook: catches the audiences attentionn If the hook is bad, the viewer will have a negative mindset of the entire film.n Boring hook = boring filmCharactersn Protagonist- lead character(s) who face the conflictn Antagonist- Source of conflict. In action films, the antagonist is often the villain or “bad guy.”n The Antagonist is not always the “bad guy.”n Static character: Does not changen Dynamic character: Changes in filmn Flat character: Doesnt move plotn Round character: Moves the plot in some wayRising Actionn Exposition gradually becomes rising action (no clear boundary)n Introduces complications which evolve into the dominant conflict n Action and tension builds. Each conflict becomes more difficult and develops the character(s)n Example: Challenges Jack Sully faces in AvatarClimaxn Generally the most exciting part of a film.n Protagonist(s) faces the main conflict and must resolve it.n The big fight scene in action movies.n In romance, the point where the couple reveal their emotionsn The turning point. (usually) When things go from bad to goodn Example: Big fight scene in AvatarFalling Actionn Any smaller conflicts are resolved. All the tension relaxes.n Often, falling action is very short and sometimes it doesnt existn Might have small conflicts, but less dramatic than climax. Like Harry Pottern What happens in Avatar after the Navi (blue aliens) start winning the battle?Denouem
