Wecelebratethepast.WehavehonoredAmericasremarkableachievements,strugglesandtriumphsinthe20thcentury.Wecelebratethefuture,imagininganevenmoreremarkable21stcentury. Aswemarvelatthechangesofthelast100years,wedreamofwhatchangesthenext100andthenext1,000willbring.Andaspowerfulasourmemoriesare,ourdreamsmustbeevenstronger.Forwhenourmemoriesoutweighourdreams,webeeold.AnditistheeternaldestinyofAmericatoremainforeveryoung-alwaysreachingbeyond,alwaysbeing,asourFounderspledged,amoreperfectunion. SoweAmericamustnotfearchange.Itead,letusweleit,embraceitandcreateit. Thegreatstoryofthe20thcenturyisthetriumphoffreedomandfreepeople.Astorytoldinthedramaofnewimmigrants,thestrugglesforequalrights,thevictoriesovertotalitarianism,thestuingadvancesineconomicwell-beingandcultureandhealthandaceandtelemunicatioandinbuildingaworldinwhichmorethanhalfthepeopleliveundergovernmentsoftheirownchoosingforthefirsttimeinallhistory. Wemustneverforgetthemeaningofthe20thcenturyorthegiftsofthosewhoworkedandmarched,whofoughtanddiedforthetriumphoffreedom. Soasweringinthisnewyearinanewcentury,inanewmilleium,wemustnowandalwaysechoDr.King,inthewordsoftheoldAmericanhymn,Letfreedomring. Ifthestoryofthe20thcenturyisthetriumphoffreedom,whatwillthestoryofthe21stcenturybe? Now,wemaynotbeabletoeliminateallhatefulintolerance,butwecandevelopahealthyintoleranceofbigotry,oreionandabjectpoverty. Wemaynotbeabletoeliminatealltheharshcoequencesofglobalization.Butwecanmunicatemoreandtravelmoreandtrademoreinawaythatliftsthelivesofordinaryworkingfamilieseverywhereandthequalityofourglobalenvironment. Wemaynotbeabletoeliminateallthefailuresofgovernmentandinternationalititutio.Butwecancertainlystrengthendemocracysoallchildrenarepreparedforthe21stcenturyworldandprotectedfromitsharshestsideeffects. Andwecandosomuchmoretoworktogether,tocooperateamongourselves,toseizetheproblemsandtheoortunitiesofthisever-smallplaweallcallhome. Inshort,ifwewantthestoryofthe21stcenturytobethetriumphofpeaceandharmony,wemustembraceourmonhumanityandourshareddestiny. Now,werejustmomentsfromthatnewmilleium.
