龚鉥博士国际会议上的讲话(英文案例部分) EastMeetsWest:TheGlobalChallengesinPsychotherapy ThisisthecaseofJudy.Shewasbroughttomygroupbyherprimarytherapist.Itwascustomaryforhertherapist,astudentintrainingwithme,tobringthemostdifficultpatientstomygroupfortreatment.Likeeveryoneelseinthegroup,JudywasencouragedtoparticipateinalltheproceduresAlthoughshediddoapainting,formostofthefirstthree-dayworkshop,Judysatinacornercurledupinafetalposition. Duringthesecondgroupsessionfivemonthslater,Judywasencouragedtoeuptothedramaticstagewithherpainting.Herpaintingshowedasmallfigurelyinginthemiddlesurroundedbylayersandlayersofdarkcolors.Judystoodinacornerofthestage,pullingherhair,hittingherselfontheheadandrefusingtomakeeyecontactwithme.Shemadegrowlingsoundslikeananimal.Wehadtoprotectherbyrestrainingher. Iencouragedhertoliedownonamattress.Shebecameterrified,muteandshaking.Shedissociated.Icalledhernameandbroughtherbacktoherself.IhadherlookintomyeyesandreassuredherthatIwasnotgoingtoharmher.Shegraduallybegantotrustmeandwaswillingtocontinuetoetothegroupandworkwithme.Hertherapisttookherbacktoherseatintheaudienceandsatbesideherfortherestofthesessions. IsuspectedthatsomethingmusthavehappenedwhileJudywaslyingdown.Duringthethirdweekend,Istartedherdramawithamirrorscene.Ihadherchoosesomeonetoplayherlyingdownonamattress,andIhadamalememberofthegroupwalkslowlytowardthebed.Judymadeastrangesoundandclasped.Iaskedherwhowasthatmanenteringtheroom.Shekepthittingherselfandwasunabletoansweratfirst.Finally,shesaidinabarelyaudiblevoice,“Daddy.”Iaskedherwhathadhappened.Whenshewassevenyearsold,herfathercametoherroomandrapedher. Idimmedthelightinthetheaterandhadthescenereenactedatherspecification.Afemaleauxiliarywaschosentoplaytheperpetrator.ThistimeJudywasabletopulltheperpetratorawayfromtheseven-year-olddoubleandthrowhim(her)offthestage.ThenIhadJudyliedownonherstomachandopenedherdumaimeridian(督脈).Ihadherreleaseallthenegativeemotionsandsoundssheswallowedovertheyears.Atthispoint,sheliterallyvomited,physicallyexpellingallherpainandanger. Afterthescene,IhadJudychoosesomeonetoholdher.Shechosehertherapisttoforther.Judysbodyrestedonhertherapist,hearttoheart,whilesoftlullabymusicwasplayedinthebackground.WhenJudycalmeddown,Ihadherdialoguewithherseven-year-oldself.Judyreassuredthechildthattherapewasnotherfault,andthatshewasaspureasever. WhenIsawJudyagainoneyearlater,shetoldmethatshehadbegunmenstruatingregularlyforthefirsttime.Shewas28yearsold.Herbreastshadalsobeguntodevelop,herfeethadgrowntwosizeslargerandshehadgrowntwocentimeterstaller.Shewasabletohugandsocializewithmembersofthegroup,asshehadnotbeenabletodowithpeopleformostofhergrowingyears. NowletmeexplainJudyshealingprocessfromthepointofviewofthepractitioner.Throughthemusic,meditationandbodymovementsJudygainedaesstotheimagesofhertraumaticexperience.Althoughshedidnotknowpriortoexploringitintherapywhatwasconcretizedinherpainting,whenthepaintingwasdramatizedJudybecameawarethatshewassexuallyviolatedbyherfatheratanearlyage.Thisincidentcausedsuddenunexpectedfrightinherandshockedherentiresystem,thebody,themindandthespirit;anditcausedtheenergytoscatteranddissipate.Inotherwords,theshockwassoseverethatitcausedherentiresystemtoshutdown. Theenergyworkoverthedumaimeridian(alongthespinalcolumn),whichconnectstoalltheyangmeridiansinthebody,allowedhertoreleaseherpent-upemotions.Thereleaseofhernegativeemotionshelpedhertoletgooftheenergyblockagethathadinterferedwithhernaturalgrowthprocesses.Thegroupssupportandtheloveandaffirmationofhertherapisthelpedhertoseeotherpeopleaspotentiallycaringratherthanantagonistic.Thetherapeuticexperienceopenedherheart/mindandalteredherperceptionoftheworldfromanenvironmentofhostilitytoaplaceofloveandpassion.Itislovethatheals.ThegroupssupportandhertherapistswarmthandcaringplayedamajorpartinJudysgrowthanddevelopment. Ourexperiences,especiallywhentheybringuspain,anguish,orothernegativefeelingsandemotions,formascreenthroughwhichwejudgeoursubsequentexperiences.Thesejudgmentsblockthefreeflowofqi(氣)inourbody,mindandspirit,andimpedeourrelationswiththeworld.Weloseourconnectionwiththecosmicflowofdao(道).Weloseourtrustinthelivingprocessesofnature.WebegintoviewtheworldwithaCartesianmind.Ourinnateconnectionwiththeprimordialsourceofthelifeforceisbroken.Howcanweregaintheinnocenceofachild?TheanswerfortheDaoistisspontaneityandcreativity;fortheChinesetraditionalphysicians,itistolivealifeinharmonyandbalancewithnature,withoutenergyblocksorimbalance. WesternallopathicdoctorsbasetheirviewonNewtonianscience.AsAndrewWeilhasnoted,“ourmedicaldoctorshavenarrowedtheirviewtopayattentiononlytothephysicalbodyandthematerialaspectoftheillness.”6Theyseeourbodyasabio-machine;ifanypartisbrokentheycanfixit.Theydonotperceivethathealingisaplexprocess,acreativeprocessofconstantlychanging,balancingandharmonizingbody,mindandspirit.TraditionalChinesemedicineconsiderstheillnessfromtheperspectiveoftheharmonyandbalanceoftheqi(氣)orthevitalforce,itsfreeflowwithintheinternalorgans,anditsinterconnection
