He has been driven byhis desire to understand how traditional Chinesemedicine works. He is now the director of a research group at Guizhou s Key Laboratory of Chemistry for NaturalProducts.TheSunnybrookResearch Institute in Canada, where he worked earlier, has successfully discovered oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes(致癌基因和肿瘤抑制基因) that have mutated(突变) in various forms ofcancer. In recentyears, Ben David turnedhis attentiontostudyingthedevelopmentof compounds(化合物) and drugs that can be used to fightcancer. “I am a biologist and some of them are chemists. They separate compounds from TCM and there has to be somebody to understand their functions. Thatis myexpertknowledge.” The province has suitable soil and air for the growth of herbs for TCM. The area is home to many racial groups, such as the Miao people who have used TCMfor long. “Here I have access to everything new and locally sourced,”he says, adding that Chinese scientist Tu Youyou, who won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Medicine, isan inspiration for him. In 2014, the Guizhou laboratory s program was included in the One Thousand Foreign Experts project, which was put forward by the central government in 2011 to invite foreign specialists to the countryover a decade or so. The laboratory has been given more than 10 million yuan to promote the drug research by the government. Despite such support, Ben David has had to deal with challenges, including building the laboratory and language barriers at the beginning. And it s difficult to find enough local talent, because people usually prefer working in bigger cities like Beijingand Shanghai.” He has lost more than 10 trained technicians in the past two years. Now, Ben David s team has 15 chemists. The laboratory has discovered some TCM components that might be used for the treatment of some kinds of cancer, and a few relevant drugs are in pre- clinical( 临 床 前 ) development, he says. Ben D
