This is the Maori language. English sailors began to visit New Zealand after 1770.They found the Maoris, a dark-skinned people, living there. They had come from islands in the Pacific Ocean 400 years before in the 14th century. For a long time the British Government was not very interested in these far-away islands. It was made a British colony(殖民地) in 1840. In this year the first British people came to settle in the new country. More and more settlers came from Britain later. The Maoris were friendly to the first settlers. But soon the new settlers wanted the Maoris land. So in1844 there was fighting between them. This was the first of several wars between the two peoples. The next fifty years was very bad for Maoris. Many were killed in the wars. Many more died from diseases brought by the British. In 1840 there were 200,000 Maoris. By 1996 this number had fallen to 42,000.For many years, the British New Zealanders looked down upon the Maoris. In the 20thcentury the two peoples have lived in peace. They have equal rights and the Maori language is one of the languages of the country. Today there are about a quarter of a million Maoris, which is about 9% of the population. Most of them live in NorthIsland. They have a rich culture and a great love for singing and dancing.1. I dont think so. “Health is the greatest wealth,” wise people say. You cant be good at your studies or work well when you are ill. If you have a headache, toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, if you run a high temperature and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think you should go to the doctor. The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse, test your blood pressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After that he will advise some treatment, or some medicine. The only thing you have to do is to follow his advice.Speaking about doctors advice, I cant help telling you a funny story. An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his disease. He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks. In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule: “Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is.” The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldnt smoke more than one cigarette a day. A month later the gentleman came into the doctors office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man.“But you know, doctor,” he said, “its not easy to begin smoking at my age.”4. The writer thinks that _.
