Current Status and Advancements in Research of Plantation Nutrient CyclingCHINESEFORESTRYSCIENCEANDTECHNOLOGY(6674)CurrentStatusandAdvancementsinResearchofPlantationNutrientCyclingLIKunZHANGChangshun2SUNYongyuI6Abstract:Thispaperintroducesconceptsandcurrentresearchstatusofplantationnutrientscyclings,andanalyzesmaincontentsofplantationnutrientscyclingasnutrientscontents,accumulationanddistributionofnutrientselements,understoryspeciesandforestlitter.Atthesametime,thepapersummarizestheproblemsinplantationnutrientscyclinganditsprospects.Keywords:nutrientcycling,understoryspecies,forestlitter,prospectsNutrientcyclingreferstothecomplicatedprocessofcycling,transferring,chemica1elementsinthechangingofmineralandecosystem,whichisoneofthemostfundamentalfunctionsofecosystem.Someofthenutrientsmainlycirculateamongorganismsandatmosphere;othersmainlycirculateamongorganismsandsoil,oramongorganisms,atmosphereandsoil.Inshort,therearethreetypesofcirculationsofnutrientcyclinginecosystem:geochemicalcycles,biogeochemicalcyclesandbiochemicalcycles.Asthelargestandmostcomplicatedlandecosysteminstructureandfunctionontheearth,theforestecosystemhavegreatinfluencesonmaintainingtheecologicalbalanceandenrichingspiritualandculturallivesofpeople.Thecontinuouscyclingofnutrientsisthefoundationofexistenceanddevelopmentforallspeciesinforestecosystem,andcycleandbalanceofnutrientelementsexertdirectimpactsonproductivity,stabilityandSUstainabilityofecosystem.Asplantationforestisaspecialforminteractionswiththefactorsofplantationwil1notonlyenrichthetheoreticalstudiesofecosystem,butinstructtheproductionpracticeaswelltoacceleratetheutilizationrateofnutrientscyclingandmaximallyimprovetheproductivityofplantationthroughadjustmentandameliorationofeachlimitingfactor.1CURRENTSTATUSOFRESEARCHTheearliestresearcherwhostudiedthecontentofplantationnutrientsisE.Ebermayer.Ebermayer(1876)measuredthenutrientcontentsinbroadleavedforestandconiferousforestinBavaria,Germany,andelaboratedtheimportanceofforestlittersinnutrientscyclinginhisbookForestLittersanditsChemica,CD,zffffD,z.SinceAlbertpublishedhisresearchresultsonnutrientscyclingofPinussylvestrisandFagussylvaticain1930ofecosystem,researchoncyclingofnutrient(Duvigeaud1974),thestudiesonmineralcyclingelementsundercertainconditionsthatwillrevealitsdistinguishingcharacteriSticSanditsinforestecosystembecameanincreasinglyactiveresearchfield.EspeciallywhenBazilevicheta1.Correspondingauthor:SunYongyu.Email:cafsdren16(1971)firstlybroughtforwardtheclassificationofnutrientscyclinginplantations,whichwasbasedontheforestlittersanditsleveloftransmission,researchonmineralcyclingwasextendedtotheareaofbiogeochemicallandscapestudy.Cole(1967)firstdeterminedthequantitativerelationshipsbetweenbiocyclingandgeochemicalcycling.Bormanneta1.(1979)conductedquantitativemeasurementofthehydrologiccyclingandnutrientscyclingbymeansofsmallwatershed,tht!sdrivingthedevelopmentofthestudyonmineralcyclingfrombiocyclingtogeochemicalcycling.Henceforth,manymonographs,collectionsandseminarproceedingsonforestecosystemnutrientscyclingresearchesgotpublished(Tsutuumi1968;Young1967;Wiley1986).Andatthesametime,studiesonexperimenttechniquesandprocessingmethodsofdatahavebeenimprovedquickly,whichindicatesthatgreatattentionhasbeenpaidtosuchresearchesacrossthewor1d.NutrientscyclingresearchinChinastartedlate.Inthelate1950s,HouXueyi(1959)conductedsomeresearchonit.DuetothegreatimpactsoftheCultureRevolution,researchesonnutrientscyclingdidntgainrapidgrowthuntill980s.Relativelythoroughresearcheshavebeendonesuccessivelyonnutrientscyclinginfirplantations(PanWeizhu1988;ChenChuyinl988;WangZhan1982;LiaoLipingeta1.1999).ShenGuofangeta1.(1985),DongShireneta1.(1986)andNieDaopingeta1.(1986)maderelativelydeepresearchonstaticdistributionanddynamiccharacteristicsofnutrientelementsandnutrientsbiocyclinginforeststandof尸.tabulaeformisCarr.HouXueyi(1982)summarizedresearchachievementsinnutrientcyclingareabetween1950.1966inChina.whichisthefirstnationalreportonfoliageelementschemicalgeography,andprovidedvaluabledataforthestudiesonbiogeochemistryorlandscapeVol5No22006geochemistry.Withtheindepthdevelopmentofecosystempositioningresearch,forestryecosystemresearchinChinahasbeengraduallyonthetrackoforganization,systematizationandnetwork(WangShuyuan,1985).Researchonnutrientshasgraduallyenteredabrandnewstage.2MAINCONTENTOFPLANTATIONNUTRIENTCYCLGRESEARCHIntermsofthecontentsofdomesticandoverseasresearchonplantationnutrientcycling,allresearcheshavebeenmainlyfocusedonthefollowingaspects.2.1NutrientscontentNutrientelementcontentnotonlydiffersindifferentorgansorindifferentspeciesorindifferentstands,butalsodiffersindifferentsizes,positionsandstagesofgrowthinasameorganofthesamespecies.Andconsistenceofeachnutrientelementisdifferent.VanLear(1995)conductsresearchonnu
