Abstract As a unique kind of translation, self-translation has a long history. The recent few years have witnessed a growing number of studies on self-translation. Studies on self-translation in China started late, among which research on certain self-translators such as Lin Yutang, Eileen Chang and Xiao Qian forms a vital part. Lin Yutang is not only a world-known scholar, litterateur and linguist, but also an outstanding self-translator with extraordinary bilingual competence. Probing into his self-translations is conducive to deepening the understanding of self-translation and upgrading our translation ability.This thesis is a descriptive research on Lin Yutangs self-translation strategies, with close textual analysis of his self-translated essays. 19 examples analyzed in the thesis are representative and are taken from 12 self-translated articles in The Little Critic: The Bilingual Essays of Lin Yutang (Qian Suoqiao, 2012). Through an examination of six types of self-translation techniques employed in his self-renditions, namely, annotation, substitution, concretization, motification, paraphrasing, and transliteration, the thesis draws the conclusion as follows: Lin Yutang adopts self-translation strategies of domestication and foreignization with a tendency for domestication. This tendency accords with his translation views featured by three translation criteria: faithfulness, fluency and beauty. Besides, this inclination also reflects his belief on the essence of translation, i.e. “Translation is an art” and his fervent readers awareness. Key words: self-translation; self-translation strategies; domestication; foreignization摘 要自译是一种特殊的翻译现象,有着悠久的历史。近年来,学界对自译现象的研究呈不断上升趋势。国内对自译的研究起步较晚,对自译者的研究是其中重要一部分,如林语堂,张爱玲,萧乾等。林语堂不仅是著名的学者,文学家,语言学家,还是一位杰出的自译家,具备卓越的双语能力。研究林语堂的自译作品,有助于加深对自译现象的理解,提升翻译水平。本文是对林语堂作品自译策略的描述性研究,对他的自译作品进行文本细读与分析。文中19个例证选自小评论:林语堂双语文集中的12篇译文,具有较强的代表性。本文通过对林语堂自译实践所采用的六种具体翻译方法的考察,即加注,替换,具体化,改译,意译,音译分析归纳出他的自译策略及其倾向,以及影响他自译策略选择的因素。通过研究,得出以下结论:林语堂在自译过程中运用了归化和异化的策略,并体现出归化占主导的倾向。这种倾向体现出他以“忠实,通顺,美”三个翻译标准为代表的翻译思想,“翻译是一门艺术”这一针对翻译本质的理念,和他深厚的读者意识。 关键词:自译;自译策略;归化;异化Contents云南民族大学毕业论文(设计)原创性声明iAcknowledgementsiiAbstractiii摘 要iv1.
