The Romans came as imperialists to exploit and govern by right of being the superior civilization. After the Roman conquerors plundered Britain, they designated it as part of the Roman Empire and endeavored to assimilate the Britons into Roman life, an effort which ultimately failed.,The process: In 55 B. C., the Roman leader Julius Caesar decided to invade Britain. But it was a failure. In 54 B. C., the second campaign was a military success, but it did not lead to Roman occupation. In 43 B. C., the Roman Emperor Claudius ordered the full Roman conquest of Britain. The Romans use different method of conquest to conquer different areas. In 123 A. Southern and eastern England, ruled by partially Romanized chiefs, were easily conquered. But in the Celtic north and west, the Romans used a different method of conquest from the Celtic which enabled the Romans to occupy Wales although they were unable to Romanize the Celtic mountaineers in the north as they had the Britons in the south.,The beginning of settlement in Britain took place in about 700 B .C . It was in these monasteries that the earliest English books were written down because at that time few except monks could read and write.,C . The christianization of the anglo saxons,From 787 , the English began to be troubled by bands of Danish Vikings (Scandinavian sea robbers ). Invaded parts of the century from time to time Came to make permanent settlement and ruthlessly destroyed many of the monasteries. King Alfred fought to drive off the Danes.
