Practical Writing,Leading In,Some Kinds of Stories,Jokes,Fairy Tales,Fables,Detective Stories,Text A Wealth, Success or Love?,Stories are important to people, politics, and education. Stories are how people make sense of themselves and their worlds. In young childrens spontaneous stories that they act out as they play, we can see how they believe people relate to one another, who they hope to become, and how they will behave.,We can see adolescents play roles in their own and other peoples stories in order to figure out where they fit into their ever-expanding worlds. As adults, the true and imaginary stories we wish to tell and believe suggest what we value most in this world. In a real sense, stories make people.,A good story gives order to human experience. A good story explores cultural values. A good story demands an emotional response from the reader. Like a great journey, a good story can show you things you have never seen before and will never forget,Creating buzz is similar in some ways to good storytelling. You build suspense by withholding information and releasing it gradually. You deliver the punch line at the right point in the story. You create characters that grab the audiences imagination. In this chapter I look at the elements that help buzz reproduce itself rapidly in the invisible networks, similar to the way an urban legend or a folk story can. It isnt a coincidence that the techniques described in this chapter are being used extensively in the film industrysneak previews, taking the audience behind the scenes, creating publicity stunts, and using celebrities to announce or advertise a product. Whatever your feelings about Hollywood, the people there know how to tell a story, and they know buzz.,Language Points for Text A,as well: in addition; also Jack plans to do some part-time work during the summer vacation, and go over his lessons, as well. out of: because of Susan joined them in the game out of interest. point to: indicate the direction, draw attention to someone or something by holding out a finger towards it fill with: make or become full The room was filled with laughter and we all had a good time. jump in: join in a conversation suddenly, interrupting other people It is impolite of children to jump in when their parents are talking about real business. take someones advice: accept someones advice Ill take your advice and get more exercise every day.,view: n. a persons opinion, belief, idea, ect., about something Australia is an attractive place from a tourists point of view. n. something seen from a particular place, especially a stretch of pleasant country; a scene You may enjoy a splendid view at the top of the mountain. vt. consider; regard; think about It depends on how you view the matter. 2. somehow: adv. by some means; in some way not yet known or stated He got very angry with Mike, but they somehow became good friends again soon. adv. for some reason that is not clear He was young, but his face somehow gave off the impression of age.,3. recognize: vt. know again It is true that dogs recognize people by their smell. vt. accept as being legal or real, or as having value.
