Two problems arise with this approach: Firstly, the use of integrated security services requires modification to the existing Internet applications, requiring re-development and re-deployment projects. Secondly, high-level security services such as authorisation are not provided by secure transport protocols, requiring applications to rely on customised (and often insecure) mechanisms for the provision of such services. We propose a platform-independent system that uses proxy applications to provide both secure transport and authorisation services transparently to existing Internet applications. We demonstrate that our approach requires no modification to existing applications, and that our security services are based on existing and widely used technologies. We discuss the merits of our architecture in the context of the intended deployment environment: an Internet-based heterogeneous private network such as an extranet or Virtual Private Network (VPN). We show that our approach achieves its goals at the expense of introducing a minor degree of performance loss into overall clientserver communications, yet we maintain that this performance loss is a minor expense in relation to the advantages of the system as a whole.878Low-Density Lipoprotein-Dependent and -Independent Effects of Cholesterol-Lowering Therapies on C-Reactive Protein: A Meta-AnalysisOriginal Research ArticleJournal of the American College of Cardiology, Volume 49, Issue 20, 22 May 2007, Pages 2003-2009Scott KinlayShow preview| PDF (523 K) | Related articles|Related reference work articles Low-Density Lipoprotein-Dependent and -Independent Effects of Cholesterol Lowering Therapies on C-Reactive Protein: A Meta-Analysis Scott Kinlay Low-density lipoprotein (LDL)lowering therapies are thought to reduce C-reactive protein (CRP) by LDL-dependent and -independent effects. However, their importance in humans is unknown. Correlations of change in LDL and CRP in individual studies are lowered by their measurement variability. By using average changes in LDL and CRP in study groups, meta-analysis reduces this variability to better assess their correlation. Using this technique, changes in LDL and CRP were highly correlated (r = 0.80, p 0.001). Statin and other drug therapies had no significant additional effect on CRP. In clinical practice, most of the anti-inflammatory effect of LDL-lowering therapies is related to the magnitude of change in LDL.879A space standards application to university-class microsatellites: The UNISAT experienceOriginal Research ArticleActa Astronautica, Volume 66, Issues 9-10, May-June 2010, Pages 1534-1543Filippo Graziani, Fabrizio Piergentili, Fabio SantoniShow preview| Purchase PDF (893 K) | Related articles|Related reference work articles 880The GIOD Project Globally Interconnected Object DatabasesOriginal Research ArticleComputer Physics Communications, Volume 140, Issues 1-2, 15 October 2001, Pages 162-171Julian J.
