After Reading Barn BurningMany novels reflect the social situation at that time. William Faulkners Barn Burning is one of them and a pretty good one. Therefore, before reading this story, learning some background is quite important. After the Civil War, the northern slavery was broken, and then black people gained freedom. Although new America was united, it was still in a bad condition. The gap between the wealthy and poor was bigger and bigger after Industry Revolution. Most of the peasants had to make a living by renting lands. The father, Abner Snopes was one of them. And the whole story was around him and his family(especially his younger son Sarty). What kind of a person Abner Snopes is like? He seemed not to care about anything and any people. He didnt care about moving house again, or in fact, he was willing to do that. He didnt notice his son was bleeding because of his fault, what he focused on was that his son nearly betrayed him on office. Now you can see, Mr. Snopes didnt trust anyone and he always imagine others was going to do something bad to him. Whats more, he was very stubborn. Once when he made up his mind, he will never change his mind, and even stepping on a shit, he will never change his route. However, the most obvious feature in his characteristic was the averseness towards the capitalist class. When he became tired of working for his present landowner, he would set a fire on the Barn so that he need to look for a new house. This action brought a lot of pain to the whole family: children had moved their home for a dozen times; his wife had been worried and she would turn nervous even when his husband stared at a little stone. Sarty felt contend to the big house which lived their employer. He thought the power of their employer was so big that his father would never offend him any longer, and then the family could live in a peaceful and happy life. However, Sarty was wrong. His father left his black and big footsteps on the expensive front-door rug in landowners house on his first day to new land. There came a series of events: the landowner ordered Snopess family to clean up the rug; Mr. Snopes felt angry and did damage to it at night; the landowner then asked two bushels of corn for the damage he did to the rug. At that time, I can nearly get what Abner Snopes would do in the next. The story turned in to a nervous tone. It was Abners preparation to the fire that made Starty do something unbelievable. He betrayed his father and told their landowner this plan. When story developed to this stage, Sarty was no more the timid boy in the crowds of people waiting him to answer the question and the obedient son who always followed his father even thought he did not agree with him at most of time. No one knows whether Sarty would be regret or not for his father was killed by the landowner in the end. But he finally grew up and left a independent figure to readers. I still remember that after the father and the son went out of the great house, the father said to the son:”Thats sweat. Nigger sweat. Maybe it aint white enough yet to suit him. Maybe he wants to mix some white sweat with it. ” Maybe, I can see the tear of the peasant at that age from their sweat
