II III Abstract Basing on their semantic meaning the author spares no efforts to research and classify the characters in Shuowenjiezi concerning marriage and birth giving. From this perspective the paper shows us the characteristics of these characters and cultural background in them. The elaborate explanation is respectively given to the characters under the principle of connecting cultural with exegetic from diachronic and synchronic studies. Therefore, this research mainly focuses on the characteristics of naming, semantic meaning, their formation as well as cultural connotation in Shuowenjiezi. The purpose of this thesis, main content, the principle that guides characters related to marriage and birth giving in Shuowenjiezi, status quo and the significance of the research are elaborated in the introduction to this thesis, followed by the main part which delves into complete analysis of many Chinese characters such as “shi”, and “ virtue of Houfei” etc. Moreover, this paper probes into psychological characters with marriage and birth giving along with their significance and illustrates the traditional thinking mode reflected in these words.
