The Schematic Structure of Follow?up Business Letters The linguistic approach to genre analysis has used the notion of schematic structure in mapping the macro-structure of texts (Swales, 1990).differently by linguists. Swales (1990) provides a definition of gemunicative purpose of discourse. According to his definition, a genre comprises of a class of communicative events, the members of which share some set of communicative purposes. These purposes constitute the rationale for the schematic structure of discourse. Swales (ibid.) argues that from a language teaching perspective, it is useful to think of genre as consisting of a series of “moves“. A move can be thought of as part of a text, which achieves a particular purpose within the text. Each move is taken to embody a number of constituent elements called “steps“.
