I. Introduction1Psycholinguistics discussion of English vocabulary learning strategiesI. IntroductionThe strategies of vocabulary learning to us have been a constantly hot topic ever since we stepped into the field of English. It is universally acknowledged that whether we master a rich vocabulary is the most direct and decisive factor in learning English. And the appropriate strategies will ultimately affect the efficiency and potential of English learning to each of us. From the day on which we started school, a variety of methods have come to us. And the same to the whole English education domain, there appear lots of practical and effective methods in vocabulary learning, while almost all of them originated from experience and do not form a systematical structure. Based on some advanced or matured theories in the world in psycholinguistics the thesis will give a much clear discussion and systematically show the English learning strategies. The psycholinguist gives a name to vocabulary knowledge keeping a stable situation (the mental symbol of vocabulary), and calls them internal lexicon or mental lexicon. Mental lexicon is similar to words or phrases in books, and it not only has richer content containing lots of certain domain knowledge and personal experience but also it is always staying in a flexible and high frequent updating situation. It is widely accepted that there are three main types of word connections in mental lexicon proposed: paradigmatic, syntagmatic and phonological. These independent to some extent mental symbols combine together in certain coding way and become what we call a phrase item. The way of its combination, or the structure of mental lexicon is still a controversial topic nowadays. Gui Shichun, a famous scholar in psycholinguistics in China, said that mental lexicon is a way for psycholinguists to research the relationship between vocabulary and its meaning: 1, how do we store the words in our memory? 2, how do we recognize and acquire words? 3, how do we understand its meaning? Now we can see all the processes do have relationship with psychology and thats why we call that metal lexicon. Actually, in China psycholinguistic is something new and stays in a period of learning from western theories. In recent years, more and more scholars turn their attention to mental lexicon and publish some representative viewpoint. The thesis will show a new perspective to the research of mental lexicon symbol, based on discussion of the relationship of cognition process, storage method and mastery of vocabulary. And it gives a discussion on how to improve learners ability in vocabulary learning. It also shows how to strengthen and extend ones mental lexicon through kinds of mental connections among English words. The paper makes a research on the experiment of organization, storage and acquisition of mental lexicon, in order to reveal rules on mental lexicon learning and give a powerful reference to English vocabulary learners. Psycholinguistics discussion of English vocabulary learning strategiesII. Literature Review3II. Literature ReviewVocabulary is the fundamental material of a language, so in order to master a language we should learn its pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. There is no doubt that either pronunciation or grammar must be expressed by vocabulary. There we can see vocabulary learning is the key link to language study. Accordingly, a growing number of learning methods appear based on researchers fervent desire to improve learners efficiency. 2.1 Some basic strategies 2.1.1 Incidental vocabulary learning What is incidental vocabulary learning (IVL)? Actually, there is still not a unified definition, while Laufer proposes an acceptable one. In her opinion, what we call IVL is the opposite of intentional vocabulary learning which means that learners master vocabulary by design. IVL is a most effective method to learn words by doing other relevant things, such as reading books, listening to music etc. Maybe what we get in this way is not the whole information of the word, but it will become familiar and even be mastered when being come across time after time. As we can see, a large quantity of words will be mastered through coming across the words times by times in our reading or listening practice. In Nagys research, only a small part of vocabulary comes from intentional learning, which means a majority of words are gotten by chance through reading or listening in daily life. In some extent, IVL is a slow and gradual process. In order to master a word including its meaning and usage, it requires us to see the word in various contexts many times. 1) Practice in native environment To every language learner the purpose is to master it and has ability to use it fluently. There is no doubt the best way to EFL learners is to communicate with someone in real time, especially with native speakers. Only when we do
