The American Studies MA program at Beijing Foreign Studies University (Beiwai) was first initiated in 1979. When we decided to launch this program, we based our decision on the following considerations:1 The United States and China had just established diplomatic relations. After a separation of contact and exchange of 30years and intense hostility and biased propaganda, the two peoples urgently needed mutual understanding. The program was aimed at promoting genuine understanding of America, the country and its people and culture.2 At the beginning of the 1980s, there was a trend of painting a completely rosy picture of the United States and a total negation of Chinese traditional culture. We decided to present, to the best of our effort, a balanced picture of the United States, not through our mouths, but through the eyes and writings of prestigious American scholars. We wanted to draw the students attention to the real, positive aspects of American society and culture, the things that make America what it is today. At the same time, we intended to let the students see the problems America faced.此文是梅仁毅教授在复旦大学美国研究中心举行的 2004 年美国研究联络会上所作的大会发言。征得梅仁毅教授同意在此发表。学术论文53 In order to take advantage of our language strength, we decided to offer all the courses in English and we have stuck to the decision ever since. Such an approach makes it easier for the students to improve their English and to use primary resources in English.At the beginning, we adopted the traditional American approach toward American Studies because we had to rely on professors from the United States who usually regarded American Studies as an interdisciplinary field. We offered courses on American history and American literature. One of the MA theses of the first group of MA students was “Mark Twain in China”, a reflection of our emphasis at that time.We experienced a very difficult period in the early 1980s. Courses varied from year to year because of the expertise of in-coming American professors. With the exception of Professor Frank Tang, the director of the American Studies Center at that time, not a single Chinese professor could offer a course in this area. Since the university was strong in literature and language teaching in the past, the university library had very limited stock of books on history or social sciences. And we did not have access to the stock at the National Library.Things began to change in the mid-1980s for two reasons. One was we began to see that American Studies in China should not be the same as such study in the study in the U.S. or in Europe. This view was reinforced when I became a member of the Chinese delegation attending American Studies Bi-annual Conference at San Diego, CA, in 1985 and visiting the American Studies program in a number of American universities. During the visit, I noticed that different universities had different emphasis in their programs, always exploiting, to the full, the resources of their faculties and the facilities in the neighborhood areas. The Chinese delegation came to a consensus that Chinas American Studies could not and should not be limited to history and literature but should reach out to embrace politics, foreign relations, society, economic development, culture and value and other related areas.
