In order to learn a language well, we should also learn about the country as well as the cultures and lifestyles of the people who speak it. To what extent do you agree or disagree? 语言学习必须结合文化 1. Foreign language learning is comprised of several components, including grammatical competence, communicative competence, language proficiency, as well as a change in attitudes towards another culture. 2. Learning a foreign language is not simply the learning of syntactic structures or new vocabulary and expressions, but should incorporate cultural elements which are intertwined with language itself. 3. The ultimate purpose of any language learning is to communicate with native speakers, which cannot be achieved effectively without knowledge of culture and tradition.* effective communication is more than a matter of language proficiency. 4. There are some expressions in each language that have culture-specific meanings (like idioms, slangs, metaphors etc). 5. Through the study of other languages, students gain a knowledge and understanding of the cultures that use that language; in fact, students cannot truly master the language until they have also mastered the cultural contexts in which the language occurs. Sample To most people, second language acquisition is a lengthy and exhausting process. A general approach taken by most learners is to learn vocabulary and memorize grammar rules. They contend that the meaning of language lies in the language itself. In my opinion, a language goes beyond its literal meaning and delivers different messages as situation change. The cultural context and background of a language have a bearing on the forming of a language. There is no distinction between acquiring a language and acquiring a culture. The first reason to support the above contention is that culture influences the evolution and formation of a language. Words become fashionable to use and then after a while are dropped. And it is interesting to know how these words were developed, usually when a trend develops, or an outside influence calls for the need of creating a new word. This usually applies to advances in technology, which new applications are invented resulting in new words needed to describe them.Familiarity with a culture is also known as the prerequisite of communication with the native speakers. Effective communication relies not only on wording, pronunciation and sentence construction but also on physical gesture, body language and facial expressions. In fact, non-verbal messages sometimes tell people more than verbal messages do. For example, silence in the English-speaking country might indicate the agreement of the speaker on something, but in some Asian countries, silence might convey a message to the contrary, disagreement or even resentment. There is no denying that by learning the cultural dimensions of a language, a language learner can make him-or-her acquainted with the skills and habits involved in cross-cultural communication. From what has been discussed, one can make it clear that culture is an element that determines the difference between languages. Failing to recognize this would impede language learning. When you get to learn a language well, you begin to understand peoples thought process and their opinions towards certain topics.
