The materials performance can be realized by processing the materials with specific properties. Basic understanding of the linkage of materials properties and performance in relation to processing is a goal of this course.EvaluationEvaluation The evaluation of the students performance will be made based upon homework, class participation, quizzes, and the final examination.Fracture Research Institute, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku UniversityContents1. The term structure means a description of the arrangement of atoms, as seen at different levels of detail. Materials scientists and engineers not only deal with the development of materials, but also with the synthesis and processing of materials and manufacturing processes related to the production of components. The term synthesis refer to how materials are made from naturally occurring or man-made chemicals. The term processing means how materials are shaped into useful components to cause changes in the properties of different materials.Fracture Research Institute, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku UniversityWhat is Materials Science and Engineering ?What is Materials Science and Engineering ?Fracture Research Institute, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku UniversitySize scales of engineering materialsSize scales of engineering materialsFracture Research Institute, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku UniversityApplication of the tetrahedron of MSE Application of the tetrahedron of MSE to ceramic superconductorsto ceramic superconductorsFracture Research Institute, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku UniversityApplication of the tetrahedron of MSEApplication of the tetrahedron of MSE to automotive chassisto automotive chassisMaterials scientists are concerned with the sheet steels - composition; - strength; - weight; -energy absorption properties; and - malleability (formability)Fracture Research Institute, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku UniversityApplication of the tetrahedron of MSE Application of the tetrahedron of MSE to semito semi- -conducting polymers for microelectronicsconducting polymers for microelectronicsFracture Research Institute, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku UniversityClassification of MaterialsClassification of MaterialsClassification metals and alloys ceramics, glasses, and glass-ceramics polymers (plastics) semiconductors composite materialsFracture Research Institute, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku UniversityMaterialsMaterialsFracture Research Institute, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku UniversityMaterialsMaterialsFracture Research Institute, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku UniversityCharacteristics of engineering materialsCharacteristics of engineering materialsFracture Research Institute, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku UniversityStrength of materialsStrength of materials1 psi = 6.895PaFracture Research Institute, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku UniversityMetals and alloys in a jet engineMetals and alloys in a jet engineFracture Research Institute, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku UniversityEngine MaterialsEngine MaterialsTitanium Nickel Steel Aluminium CompositesTitanium Nickel Steel Aluminium CompositesFracture Research Institute, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku UniversityMaterial StrengthMaterial StrengthSpecific StrengthNickel AlloySteelAluminium AlloyTitanium AlloyTemperatureFracture Research Institute, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku UniversityCeramic materialsCeramic materialsFracture Research Institute, Gr
