Green Polyethylene Biopolymer, innovation transforming plastic into sustainabilityLower greenhouse gas emissions Made from 100% renewable raw materials RecyclablePolyethylene made from renewable sources is the result of investments in innovation and Braskems commitment to the environment. The sustainable development promoted by Green PE creates value for the industrys production chain, for Clients and for society, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Braskems Green Plastic launches a new phase in the plastics production chain, bringing innovation and new sustainable solutions.Green Polyethylene combines high performance and pro- cessability, while the use of renewable raw materials helps reduce global warming. The “Im green” seal allows consumers to identify products that were made using Braskems Green Plastic. The seal was developed to communicate simply and directly to the grow- ing community that values products made from renewable components, helping Clients add value to their products and foster a more sustainable future. Green Plastic is now a realityThe annual production of 440 million pounds of Green PE requires 160,000 acres of sugarcane, which represents 0.02% of Brazils arable land.*Source: So Paulo Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA)99% other crop | livestock activitiesAround 1% of Brazils arable land is used to produce ethanol.*Renewable raw materialSustainable development for the entire production chainGreen Plastic is the result of the combination of Brazils highly developed sugarcane and ethanol industry and Braskems technology, innovation and commitment to sustainability, all of which benefit the entire production chain.Brazil: natural place for ethanol produc- tion and respecting the environment. Zero impact on the Amazon Rainforest and on food productionBrazil has approximately 840 million acres of arable land. Sugarcane cultivation uses 20 million acres, while soybean cultivation uses 60 million acres, corn cultiva- tion uses 35 million acres and livestock production uses 494 million acres.*The state of So Paulo, which is located more than 1,250 miles from the Amazon Region, is Brazils main sugarcane producing region, accounting for some 60% of the countrys production.* The Amazon Region has a climate that is not well suited to sug- arcane production and is located outside of the Sugarcane Zone, which prevents sugar and ethanol plants from receiving licenses to operate in the region. The modernization of Brazils sugar and ethanol indus- try, the increased mechanization of harvesting and the preparation of ethanol plants to produce bioelectricity assures a major competitive advantage and sustainability for the entire process, from the planting of sugarcane to the production of biopolymers.* Sources: IBGE, Conab and Unica. The purpose is to educate potential suppliers about the social and environmental requirements they must meet to become an ethanol supplier to the company. This allows Braskem to strengthen its relationship with the ethanol chain, while focusing on expanding its contribution to sustainable development.Measures must be adopted for the burning of waste in fields, biodiversity, other environmental practices, human and labor rights and making information avail- able for studies on product life cycles. The code is grounded in Brazilian law and modeled on the initiatives detailed in the So Paulo State Agricultural and Environ- mental Protocol, the UN Global Compact, Brazils Agri- cultural and Ecological Zoning for Sugarcane and Brazils National Commitment to Improve Labor Conditions for Sugarcane Workers. To view the Code of Conduct for Ethanol Suppliers, go to Braskems website at www.braskem.comLower CO2 emissionsHigh Environmental PerformanceNotes: *Replaces 1 lbs of fossil-based PE. *Estimated amount of carbon capture based on estimated annual Green PE production of 440,000 lbs | * Based on the CO2 emissions of a car powered by a 1.0-liter gasoline engine that is driven 9,5 miles per day for one year | Source: 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse | * Based on the CO2 emissions produced by generating the electricity consumed by a Brazilian home in 12 months | Source: Brazilian Government - Ministry of Science and Technology - National Climate Change Programa more sustainable WORLDRecyclingENVIRONMENTAL RESPECT for thousands of peoplesoccerfieldacres of land12.476,600 lbs of Green of sugarcanegallons of ethanol1,900182,000 lbs PolyethyleneGreen Polyethylene production cycleBraskems Green Plastics are made
