They constituted the western equivalent of the Chinese 5 states of change (金- metal、木-wood、水-water、火-fire、土-earth). Each of the humors was associated with particular physical and mental characteristics, and could, moreover, be combined for more complex personality types: (e.g. choleric-sanguine, etc). The result is a system that provides a quite elaborate classification of types of personality.Similar to the theory of yin-yang, the theory of five elements - wood, fire, earth, metal and water -was an ancient philosophical concept used to explain the composition and phenomena of the physical universe. In traditional Chinese medicine the theory of five elements is used to interpret the relationship between the physiology and pathology of the human body and the natural environment.
