Lord George Gordon Byron (17881824) She walks in beautyShe walks in beautyBackgroundvIn June,1814,several months before Byron met and married his first wife, he attended a party. vThen he was inspired by the sight of his cousin, the beautiful Miss Wilmot who was wearing a black spangled mourning dress.vLord Byron was struck by his cousins dark hair and fair face, the mingling of various lights and shades. This became the essence of his poem about her.一vShe walks in beauty, like the nightvOf cloudless climes and starry skies;vAnd all thats best of dark and brightvMeet in her aspect and her eyes:vThus mellowd to that tender light :vWhich heaven to gaudy day denies. v她走在美的光彩中,象 夜晚v皎洁无云而且繁星漫天;v明与暗的最美妙的色泽v在她的仪容和秋波里呈 现v耀目的白天只嫌光太强 , 它比那光亮柔和而幽 暗。 二vOne shade the more, one ray the less,vHad half impaird the nameless gracevWhich waves in every raven tress,vOr softly lightens oer her face;vWhere thoughts serenely sweet expressvHow pure, how dear their dwelling-place. v增加或减少一份明与暗v就会损害这难言的美。v美波动在她乌黑的发上 ,v或者散布淡淡的光辉v在那脸庞,恬静的思绪v指明它的来处纯洁而珍 贵。 三 vAnd on that cheek, and oer that brow,vSo soft, so calm, yet eloquent,vThe smiles that win, the tints that glow,vBut tell of days in goodness spent,vA mind at peace with all below,vA heart whose love is innocent! v呵,那额际,那鲜艳的 面颊,v如此温和,平静,而又 脉脉含情,v那迷人的微笑,那容颜 的光彩,v都在说明一个善良的生 命:v她的头脑安于世间的一 切,v她的心充溢着真纯的爱 情! The remaining lines tell us that her face and eyes combine “all thats best of dark and bright”. The second verse :The glow of the ladys face is nearly perfect. The shades and rays are in just the right proportion, and because they are, the lady possesses a nameless grace. This conveys the romantic idea that her inner beauty is mirrored by her outer beauty. The last verse :The first three lines of physical description and last three lines that describe the ladys moral characters.
