Notre Dame de Paris (Our Lady of Paris in French) is a Gothic cathedral on the eastern half of the le de la Cit in the fourth arrondissement of Paris, France, with its main entrance to the west. It is the cathedral of the Catholic archdiocese of Paris: that is, it is the church that contains the cathedra, or official chair, of the Archbishop of Paris. Notre Dame de Paris is widely considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture in the world. It was restored and saved from destruction by Viollet-le-Duc, one of Frances most famous architects. The name Notre Dame means Our Lady in French. Notre Dame de Paris was one of the first Gothic cathedrals, and its construction spanned the Gothic period. Its sculptures and stained glass show the heavy influence of naturalism, unlike that of earlier Romanesque architecture.Notre Dame de Paris was among the first buildings in the world to use the flying buttress (arched exterior supports). The building was not originally designed to include the flying buttresses around the choir and nave. After the construction began and the thinner walls (popularized in the Gothic style) grew ever higher, stress fractures began to occur as the walls pushed outward. In response, the cathedrals architects built supports around the outside walls, and later additions continued as such. The cathedral suffered desecration during the radical phase of the French Revolution in the 1790s, when much of its religious imagery was damaged or destroyed. During the 19th century, an extensive restoration project was completed, returning the cathedral to its previous state.http:/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notre_Dame_de_Parisfanny In thinking of Gothic architecture, our thoughts always ascend. For that which embodies Gothic style most is lofty; Rose windows of stained glass, ornately crafted spires, and the guardians of grand cathedrals, the Gargoyles. Each is distinctly Gothic, and all distinctly Notre Dame de Paris. Notre Dame de Paris, more than seven hundred years old, is only the most recent of holy houses to occupy this ancient sacred ground. The Celts held their services on this island in the Seine, and atop their sacred groves the Romans built their own temple to Jupiter. In the early years of Christianity, a basilica dedicated to St. Etienne was constructed around 528 by Childebert. A church in the Romanesque manner replaced the basilica, and this stood until 1163 when work began on the structure which 回答人的补充 2009-05-17 23:47 自由女神像英文介绍Out of all of Americas symbols, none has proved more enduring or evocative than the Statue of Liberty. This giant figure, torch in hand and clutching a stone tablet, has for a century acted as a figurehead for the American Dream; indeed there is probably no more immediately recognizable profile in existence. Its worth remembering that the statue is - for Americans at least - a potent reminder that the USA is a land of immigrants: it was New York Harbor where the first big waves of European immigrants arrived, their ships entering through the Verrazano Narrows to round the bend of the bay and catch a first glimpse of Liberty Enlightening the World - an end of their journey into the unknown, and the symbolic beginning of a new life. 回答人的补充 2009-05-17 23:48 stirring sight, with Emma Lazaruss poem, The New Colossus, written originally to raise funds for the statues base, no less quotable than when it was writtenHere at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. Dont be surprised if theres an hour-long wait to ascend. Even if there is, Liberty Parks views of the lower Manhattan skyline, the twin towers of the World Trade Center lording it over the jutting teeth of New Yorks financial quarter, are spectacular enough.回答人的补充 2009-05-17 23:52 以下内容来自”埃菲尔铁塔”官方网站: http:/www.tour-eiffel.fr/teiffel/uk/ 猪猪侠 回答采纳率:29.0% 2009-05-17 23:43 1.
