Pardon me, Mr President 深圳实验学校中学部颜咏兰 Each Thanksgiving Day, a very strange thing happens at the White House. There, the US President will pardon a bird - a turkey! In the morning, two turkeys are taken to the White House. The President will pat one of them on the head. Then the turkeys are pardoned! People wont eat them and they will go to a zoo and live happily! The turkey pardoning began in 1947. Since then, every US president has pardoned a turkey on Thanksgiving. Where do the two lucky turkeys come from? Actually, each April, people prepare about 2,500 turkeys. They give them the best food and let them live in houses with air-conditioning ! As Thanksgiving gets nearer, two of the best turkeys are chosen. The others become Thanksgiving dinners somewhere. One lucky bird is the winner and one is the first runner up . The runner up is just in case the winner doesnt behave. Both the two birds weigh about 23 pounds and look beautiful. People vote on the White House website to decide the two turkeys names. In 2004, President Bush pardoned a turkey named Biscuit. And his friend, the first runner up, was called Gravy.Curriculum focusCross-cultural awareness : Learning about Thanksgiving DayLanguage Skills: learning to tell a storyPre-readingWhen is Thanksgiving Day?Why is it celebrated? What do people do on Thanksgiving Day?
