Industrial Design What is it? What is the designers role.Industrial Design Collaboration and its importanceWe cant work in isolation and enforce opinion. The essence of good design is the collaboration between the designer, the client, the user and the supplier. No one party holds the definitive view. True design success is only achieved by incorporating the most appropriate blend of each parties view into the design and this is the role of the industrial designer.Clients Types of ClientIn broad terms we work with 3 different types of client:Blue ChipSMEsInventor and Sole TradersCIDSSSSSKey IssuesClients Relationship with a Blue Chip CompanyDevelopment budget and resource.Speed of decisions.Company Logistics:-Purchasing Power-Manufacturing-Assembly-Testing.More formal and structured review and progression process.Higher number of people in the supply chain.CIDSSSKey IssuesSSSSClients Relationship with an SMESExperts in own field but typically limited in terms of production knowledge.More budgetary constraints.Greater sense of urgency to re-coup investment in NPD.More direct and responsive designer/client relationship.CIDSSSSSKey IssuesClients Relationship with a Inventor / Sole TraderLimited in terms of their knowledge of the design process and production and their inherent costs.Large budgetary constraints. Can be often seduced by the idea without fully researching its commercial viability.Case Study Electronic Voting DeviceIntroduction to Project - The ClientThe ProductOverall focus for the projectThe processCase Study The ProductKey IssuesCID DStage 1 Concept GenerationMDTDDDFoundation for whole project.Establish the needs of the client and the market.Listen and Interpret.Propose Design Strategy to confirm understanding and design direction.Setting Appropriate Targets.CID DStage 1 Concept GenerationKey IssuesMDTDDDUIdea GenerationInternal Idea ReviewEstablish the needs of the user and the market.Listen and Interpret.Channelling information into the design.Forging pathways for the Project.Basing decisions on a sound and varied experience base.MCID DStage 1 Concept GenerationKey IssuesMDTDDDUIdea GenerationInternal Idea ReviewIDUCPresentation of IdeasMDTDBoardMMTMTDIntegration.Communication.Confirmation of an understanding of the project parameters.Verifying decisions.Focusing attention on possibilities.
