FIRST GRADE READING CURRICULUMThe primary focus of the reading curriculum in the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas is to maximize the talents in our students so they may become proficient and informed critical readers in Gods ever changing world.STANDARD 1: READINGThe student will read and comprehend text across the curriculum including Bible Scripture.Phonetic Clues The student will: 1. Display decoding skills by:Reproducing lower case letters +Identifying/using:Consonant sounds +Short vowels sounds +ClustersDigraphs, segmentation, deletion, addition, substitution Variant vowel soundsR-controlled vowelsHard/soft g and clong vowel sounds + Recognizing and forming rhyming words. + Identify onsets and rimes in spoken words (alliteration, intonating, rhyme). Structural Analysis The student will:1. Demonstrate knowledge of the following word-building skills through oral and written language:Plurals (s, es) Compound words Contractions Base (root) words Suffixes (ed, ing, s, es) Vocabulary Development The student will:1. Demonstrate the ability to:Identify book parts Use multiple graphic aids Work with Technology (see Appendix B) 2. Demonstrate a proficiency in alphabetizing to the 1st letter in oral and written language. +3. Demonstrate an ability to locate words in a dictionary/glossary to find spelling of words.4. Develop the ability to use a variety of study strategies. (see appendix B) 5. Explore multiple resources for locating information and seeking answers.Literature Components The student will: 1. Display a proficiency in identifying/explaining the main characters of a story through oral and written language. +2. Verbally describe the following story elements:Setting Relationship between character and setting Motivation of character Problem/conflict Plot: beginning, middle, end 3. Recognize the following literary devices by listening and responding:Repetition Refrain Rhyme Rhythm Genre The student will: 1. Be exposed to a variety of authors, cultures, and genre through literature as decided by each faculty.2. Experience the Holy Scripture as literature by listening, reading, or role playing parables and narratives. 3. Be able to identify different text type: narrative, expository, technical.Reading Fluency The student will: 1. Develop oral reading skills by practicing:Expression Projection Fluency Sustained oral reading Sustained silent reading Supplemental/Independent Reading The student will: 1. Extend their interest and develop their independent reading skills by:Daily reading for a variety of purposes Sharing opinions Reading a variety of authors Independent content area reading STANDARD 2: LITERATUREThe student will respond to a variety of text and retell Bible stories. Literature is infused with Catholic values. NCEA has developed a list of books that promote Catholic values. See the NCEA Working Booklist.STANDARD 3: WRITINGThe student will write effectively for a variety of audiences, purposes, and contexts. Writing is infused with Catholic values. See the Language Arts curriculum.STANDARD 4: RESEARCHThe student will apply reading and writing skills to demonstrate learning.The student will:1. Use effective research practices.2.
