Sketches by Boz is a collection of short pieces published by Charles Dickens in 1836 accompanied by illustrations by George Cruikshank. It consists of 56 passages divided into four sections: “Our Parish“, “Scenes“, “Characters“, and “Tales“. Of these, only the last contains fiction. 1836 Sketches by Boz 博兹札记 A rambling tale about the adventures of the naive good-natured Mr Pickwick and his travelling companions. The streetwise Sam Weller, recruited (吸纳)along the way by Pickwick, helps them to survive.1836 1837 The Pickwick Papers 匹克威克外传 Full of fun, capturing the exuberant(充满活力的)spirit of the young Dickens, this work built on his earlier Sketches by Boz to catapult him to fame(突然成名) and is still one of the best loved books in English Literature. 1836 1837 The Pickwick Papers 匹克威克外传Oliver Twist is a book with a serious theme, to expose the abuse and corruption suffered by children, this second major work is nevertheless full of humour, but of a satirical kind.1837-1838 Oliver Twist 雾都孤儿 Relatively to the other works of Dickens Oliver Twist is not of great value, but it is of great importance. The interest of the book lies in its revelation (揭示)of those moral, personal, and political instincts (天性)which were the make-up of his character and the permanent support of that literary genius.1837-1838 Oliver Twist 雾都孤儿 Some readers think “It is by far the most depressing of all his books; it is in some ways the most irritating(使人恼怒的); yet its ugliness gives the last touch of honesty to all that spontaneous and splendid output.” But without this one discordant (不和谐的)note all his merriment (欢乐)might have seemed like levity(轻浮).1837-1838 Oliver Twist 雾都孤儿 Nicholas Nickleby is Dickenss first romantic novel because it is his first novel with a proper and dignified ( 高贵的)romantic hero. Nicholas Nickleby is a proper, formal, and ceremonial (正式的) hero. He has no psychology; he has not even any particular character; but he is made deliberately(故意地 )a hero - young, poor, brave, unimpeachable(清白的), and ultimately triumphant(胜利的).1838- 1839 Nicholas Nickleby 尼古拉斯尼克贝This story, written for the shortlived magazine Master Humphreys Clock, has a young girl, Little Nell, fleeing with her grandfather from the clutches of the repulsive(使人 厌恶的) Quilp, a malicious(恶 意的)moneylender. 1840- 1841The Old Curiocity Shop 老古玩店Their flight exposes them to a variety of experiences and characters, many having to do with the vagabonds(流浪者) and itinerant entertainers(游历的表演者) of the time. The death of Little Nell is among the best known scenes in the works of Dickens. 1840- 1841The Old Curiocity Shop 老古玩店With the combination of the sentimental(感 伤的), the grotesque(古怪的) and the socially concerned, and its story of pursuit and courage, which sets the downtrodden (受 压迫的)and the plucky (勇敢的)against the malevolent (坏心肠的)and the villainous(可 耻的), was an immediate popular success. Little Nell so captured the imagination of his readers that while the novel was being serialized, many of them wrote to him about her fate. 1840- 1841The Old Curiocity Shop 老古玩店The first of Dickenss two historical novels, set in the period that led up to the Gordon Riots of 1780(戈登动乱)against Roman Catholicism.Barnaby is a half-witted (愚笨的)young man who becomes caught up in the mayhem(暴行),but escapes the gallows(绞刑台)through the intervention of Gabriel Varden,a locksmith.Dolly Varden,Gabriels coquettish(妖艳的) daughter, is a creation whose name was subsequently used for a style of dress and hat. 1841 Barnaby Rudge 巴纳比拉奇charles dickensthe First Period
