Health Sciences Centre,Student Placement Patient Unit Profiles,Jackie MacLean Clinical Placement Coordinator Health Sciences Centre jmacleanhsc.mb.caPh: 1-204-787-2927,PROGRAMS at HSC,Cardiac Sciences, Family Medicine, Oncology & Rehabilitation/Geriatrics ProgramCentral Support ServicesChild Health ProgramEmergencyMedicine ProgramMental Health Program Child & Adolescent Mental Health Program Renal ProgramSurgery ProgramWomens Health Program,Cardiac Sciences, Family Medicine, Oncology & Rehabilitation/Geriatrics Program,RR5 RR5 is an inpatient rehabilitation unit that provides comprehensive rehabilitative nursing care to patients with Spinal cord injuries, Amputations and various neuro musculoskeletal conditions. In addition, a number of the patients cared for on RR5 have a broad spectrum of medical co-morbidities. The nurses of the rehabilitation unit are uniquely qualified to facilitate recovery of the individual to the highest functional, psychosocial, and physical levels possible. The rehabilitation nurse is an integral part of the multidisciplinary rehabilitation team which is comprised of physiatrists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, vocational counselor, recreational therapists and spiritual care. In collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, the patient and their family, rehabilitation nurses assess, plan, perform, coordinate and evaluate rehabilitative care based on each individual patients unique circumstances, goals, and most importantly their abilities rather than their disabilities. The rehabilitation nurses together with the interdisciplinary team ensure that individuals impacted by disability are provided with the knowledge, tools and resources they will require in order for their successful return to the community GD6 A 15 single bed HEPA filtered unit that specializes in the provision of care to patients with acute haematological malignancies and/or diseases. Complex medical and nursing care includes administration of high dose chemotherapy and blood and marrow transplantation. A close working relationship is fostered and maintained with CancerCare Manitoba.,CENTRAL SUPPORT SERVICES,Medical Relief Team The Medical Relief Team (MRT) provides short term nursing coverage to the units within the Health Sciences Centres Medicine Programs Clinical Teaching Units as well as the sub-acute medical units. Surgical Relief Team The Surgical Relief Team (SRT) provides short term nursing coverage to the units within the Health Sciences Centres Surgical Program. Vascular Access Team The Vascular Access Team (VAT) provides assessment, initiation, monitoring of intravenous sites for patient within the Health Sciences Centre excluding the Childrens Hospital and the Womens Hospital. These services are available seven days a week 24 hours a day. The VAT also provides a consultative service for the assessment and placement of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) from Monday through Friday from 0730 1545.,CHILD HEALTH PROGRAM,CH3/CK3 Pediatric Surgery/Burn Unit: A 22 bed unit for surgery and burn patients, including two monitored beds for closer observation of higher risk postoperative patients.CH5 A 20 bed unit; 10 transitional care beds and 10 acute medical beds. Typical patient groups include: brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, children requiring long-term IV or TPN, CF patients, children with eating disorders, children with developmental disabilities/complex medical needs, and children requiring multiple investigations.CK5 Pediatric Medicine: A 16 bed medical unit including hematology, oncology, bone marrow transplant, nephrology, renal transplants, neurology, endocrinology and cardiology patients,CH4 Acute Pediatric Medicine: A 22 bed unit with monitoring and isolation capability for acute medical pediatrics. Services include cardiology, respirology, genetics, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, and metabolic disorders.Pediatric Special Care Unit (PSCU) A 6 bed unit for technologically dependent children requiring long-term care. Focus of care is on teaching and coordination of care/services to enable caregivers to manage their childs care in the community.Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) A 9 bed critical care unit that cares for children with critical medical and surgical problems.,CHILD HEALTH PROGRAM,CHILD HEALTH PROGRAM,Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) An 18 bed unit for critically ill newborns. The Provincial Neonatal Transport Team works out of this unit including NICU Nurses, Physicians and Respiratory TherapistsEmergency The Childrens Hospital Emergency Department cares for children who present with all levels of emergencies with access to all pediatric specialties. Operating Room The OR has 6 OR theaters as well as a location for local procedures. Surgical procedures encompass all services with the exception of Cardiac Open Heart Procedures.,CHILD HEALTH PROGRAM,Pediatric Post-Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) A 7 stretcher bay unit responsible for the care of postoperative pediatric patients recovering from a variety of surgical procedures.Pediatric Day Unit (PDU) The PDU is located on CH3. The goal of the Unit is to provide a setting for children needing tests or treatments that can be provided on an outpatient basis rather than as an inpatient. A procedural sedation team provides sedation for children undergoing painful procedures.Childrens Clinic As the Outpatient Department of Childrens Hospital, the Childrens Clinic has more than 50,000 patient visits per year in its 35 subspecialty clinics.,
