My English writing road胡佳奇IvyLooking back my English writing time, I am glad to find that I have walked such a long and tortuous road. Though the road goes up and down, it is uphill as a whole. With continually learning and correcting, I am growing little by little and forming a more mature perception system. I no longer write meaningless sentences in order to reach the minimum essay word limit, or just list many popular examples which have been used for thousands of times, but writing to express myself in my own style and from my unique point of view.To begin with, my composition was composed of simple subject-link verb-predicative structure and subject-verb-object structure. Sentences always started with “I“,“She“ and “He“ and content couldnt get away from stereotyped instances. Maybe I was limited by my shallow English knowledge, or maybe influenced by the examination-oriented education in which we were taught the same structure of English writing and the same mode of paragraph division.Later, when I stepped into high school, I was taught deeper and more detailed English writing skills. Thus I varied my English expressions and enriched my content making the whole composition diverse, by which teachers would be curious about what I would write next after seeing my first paragraph. But just as my early writing period, I couldnt escape from writing mode in that I was still under the pressure of College Entrance Examination, and I had to cater to usual marking standard.After being a college student, I got more systematic and specialized practice. As a college freshman, I firstly got in touch with aprofessional course named English Grammar and Writing, which offered me deeper insight about how a sentence was formed and how many kinds of higher-level sentences I could use to express the same idea more accurately. Early in my high school learning time I was trapped in the maze of clauses, but now I can use clauses skillfully as well as subjunctive mood and so on. This was my first big step on my road of English writing.As it comes to my sophomore year, another English course named English Reading and Writing taught,I learn holistic and partial analysis. First, from the holistic perspective, we not only analyze the train of thought, but also the topic of each paragraph and conjunctions among sentences. Different with what our high school teachers taught, what was very simple and didnt meet teachers of all tastes, such as first, second and third, conjunctions in university courses become more intricate and multiple. Moreover, we were taught different types of articles and the overall writing skills just in case of kinds of questions in exam. Second, from the partial perspective, vocabulary is a very important part of writing, especially verbs and adjectives. To show a sequence of actions, we can use a series of verbs if we expect that our compositions are precise and attractive. To describe a scene or an object, we can use some adjectives such as glamorous, gorgeous and stunning instead of beautiful. Also, several distinctive sentences that occasionally emerged in an ordinary passage would polish the whole composition drastically. Thus the usage of rhetoric in English writing cant be ignored. Finishing this composition, I just found that I still have lots of knowledge to acquire and skills to develop. On the way to becoming a qualified English writer there is a long road to go. With these writing methods my teacher instructing, I believe I will walk smoothly and further.
