,My Appreciation of the Joy Luck Club,The first time I saw the title of the film, the Joy Luck Club, I thought that it would be a film filed with joy, luck and happiness. However, out of my expectation, in the film, I saw many unpleasant thingsconflicts, hardship, disappointment, sorrow, hurt, torture and so on. Of course there were some moving parts, and fortunately, it was a happy ending. Anyway, I enjoyed it very much. It made me have a penetrating thinking.,The Joy Luck Club is a stunning novel concerning the lives of Chinese immigrants in America. It explores the tender and tenacious(牢固的) bond between four mothers and their children, of which Amy Tan got the inspiration from her difficult relationship with her mother, a typical Chinese immigrant parent.,Lets know about it,Amy, in The Joy Luck Club, specially weaves an exquisite (精美)tapestry(画卷) presenting the four immigrants bewilderment at American culture and their struggles to inculcate their Chinese cultural heritage in their daughters. In such a story-telling way, Amy describes, from the perspectives of different characters, the confusion of fierce love and misunderstanding which lies between the two generations.,The reason for the conflict depicted becomes evident when Amy Tan sets her novel background in the cultural shock. The misunderstanding between the immigrant mothers and their American-born daughters embodies the contradiction between the two different kinds of cultural values. The four mothers would like to make up the characters of their daughters, under Chinese traditional values, and with their own expectations.,However, it is American culture that the four daughters grew up in; hence, they could not accept Chinese traditional values and did not obey the requirements of their mothers. On such one hand, the two generations encountered conflict since they could not communicate under the same cultural values.,On the other hand, because of their Chinese family background, the four daughters certain Chinese traditional values embedded unconsciously in mind were contradicted with the Native American people. They tried to act equally with their “seniors” or parents, just like other Americans, but the traditional values their family worshipped had them feel obliged to be compliant(屈服) to their parents.,In China, it is taken granted that the relationship between daughters and mothers should be intimate and harmonious. It is of disrespect if a daughter does not follow her mothers rules. On the contrary, the America cherishes the notion that everyone is equal. In other words, children and parents are in an equal relation or a relation of friends despite the difference in ages. Thats why American peoples sense of right and equality in the family is so intense and most of the American parents would fully respect their childrens views.,Since the four daughters in the novel had been “Americanized” and became a typical “Banana”(黄皮白心人), while the four mothers still interpreted their relationship in Chinese conservative way, the dispute between the two generations of cultural differences mounted.,From the stories,we know.,Thank you!,
