Taboos in China,About Colors-taboos in different nationalities,1.Dont wear white or black clothing, since they are the traditional colours of mourning. At the same time, red ,as a color which regarded as a representative of “rudeness“ in western cultures , is cherished by Chinese as a symbol of bloom.,2. Dont write a persons name in red color. In ancient China , a prisoner would have to write his name in red before the death panalty, which means you would never get your rigut of living in this world. This is award by most of Chinese nowadays at range from young to old. SO Be Careful!,3.Black and white stands for sadness and “recalling the death“, neither wearing in white or black to a wedding nor attending a funeral in red is a wise decision.,Next, Taboos related to Traditional Festivals.,1.Floors may not be swept and garbage may not be disposed on the first day of the New Year for fear of casting riches out the door.(BUT to be hoest, most of Chinese now wont pay attention to this kind of stuff even for old parents),1.Your hair may not be cutted in the first month of new year(lunar year, our spring festival of course). There is a saying that“正月剪头死舅舅“, which meas if you cut your hair in the first month of Spring Festival, all of your uncles may be dead soon.As a result of it, you may notice that most of the babershops will close during that period. AND when it comes to the second day of the second month, it will be a good time ,especially for boys , to cut their hair, for the saying “二月二,龙抬头“, which can be translated as “the drangon would raise its hand on 2.2“, and in Chinese culture, we call a boy “Drangon-like“ to praise him(for girls are “phoenix“).,For Number-taboosJust one: We dont like “Four“ or any number which has many “four“ in it like 444,beacuse its ponounciation is extremely similiar to “death“ in Chinese(the ponounciation is “si“).You can use this number if necessary, we just dont appreciate it when there comes a big ceremony, for example, if you hold your wedding on April fourth ,please change, everyone will think you are crazy. At the same time ,inviting 444 people to your wedding is extremely foolish and unacceptable.,LIFE,1.Dont break any dishes, otherwise you may incur more misfortune for the New Year. However, on the eve of spring festival, its a good thing to break dishes or windows for the phrase “碎碎平安“, of which the ponounciation is all the same to岁岁平安“ , which means it will be all soft and smooth in the following year. But we will not break dishes on purpose for its too sharp!,2.Do not ever give old people watches as a gift! For this behavior called“送钟“(swong zhong), which means giving others a watch, has the same ponounciation of “送终“, which stands for the meaning of “seeing you die“!,Thanks for listening,
