Unit 3 A taste of English humour Period 2 Reading课后阅读作业 . 阅读理解AWe all know that Britain and the US are two countries connected by a common language. But in fact, the differences are more fun to observe, as BBC did in a recent story called 8 Situations When Britons Behave Differently From Americans. Below Teens has picked out four for you. Take a look. 1. When someone knocks into youIf someone bumps into an American, the victim will most likely look the accidental aggressor in the face and expect an apology. If, however, the victim happens to be British, chances are that the victim will say“sorry”before the other can make his or her own apology. 2. When you get dressed for dinnerBritons dont all change into evening dress for supper like what you may have seen in popular TV shows like Downton Abbey. But they do tend to make an effort when going out for dinner somewhere nice. Americans, however, will probably wear a casual shirt to a fancy eatery. 3. When you dont finish your foodBritons wouldnt think to take the leftovers home when dining out at a restaurant. They think the food is somehow “tainted” once theyve poked(杵; 捅)at it with a knife and fork. In the US, wrapping it up to take home is a standard practice. 4. When you get into a taxiAfter Britons tell cab driver an address, they hardly speak to each other until its time to pay. Even if theyre being taken in a roundabout way, theyre very unlikely to say anything. In the US, however, most passengers think nothing of telling the driver what route to take after telling him or her the destination. 【语篇概述】英国人和美国人虽然说着相同的语言, 却有着许多完全不同的处事态度与生活习惯。在很多生活细节上, 你一眼就能区分出他们。1. Garlands research team reviewed 63 studies, including several large long-term ones, on the relationship between vitamin D and certain types of cancer worldwide between 1966 and 2004. “Theres nothing that has this ability to prevent cancer, ”he said, urging governments and public health officials to do more to fortify(增强)foods with vitamin D. Garland is part of a University of California at San Diego Moores Cancer Center team that published its findings this week online in the American Journal of Public Health. Vitamin D is found in milk, as well as in some fortified orange juice, yogurt and cheeses, usually at around 100 international units(IU)a serving. “People might want to consider a vitamin supplement to raise their intake to 1, 000 IUs per day”Garland said, adding that it was well within the safety guidelines established by the National Academy of Sciences. The authors said that taking more vitamin D could be especially important for people living in northern areas, which receive less vitamin D from sunshine. “African Americans, who dont produce as much of the vitamin because of their skin colour, could also benefit significantly from a higher intake, ”the authors said. 【语篇概述】文章介绍了研究表明维生素D可以降低患癌症的几率, 并且告诉了读者几种获取维生素D的方法。6.
