Book Three,Social Problems,Unit Three,Task 1: Brain Storming Task 2: Group Discussion Task 3: Proverb,Task 1,As societies change and develop, many problems emerge. Change itself can be a social problem if it occurs too quickly. This is sometimes called the problem of “future shock.”,Task 1 Brain Storming,Ask the students to work in groups quickly to prepare a list of at least 20 words they associate with social problems (problems and cause) Ask the group leader to write the words generated by his/her group on the blackboard. Erase words that are repeated in various lists. Classify the words and discuss the questions.,samples overpopulation, housing, water supply, transportation, littering, theft, robbery, murder, mugging, rape, pollution, smuggling, fake products, trafficking of children and women, bribery, corruption, graffiti, gambling, prostitution, domestic violence, layoffs, computer crime, etc. 2. 1) poverty, unemployment, etc.,Task 2 Group Discussion,Work in groups to think of as many ways as possible to stop littering ( the dropping of rubbish like plastic bags, waste paper, peelings, etc. in streets, parks, and other public places).,Possible ways to stop littering,- raising peoples awareness of public health; - having public role models appear in commercials and advertisements putting rubbish into rubbish bins; - putting more garbage vans along the streets, in the parks, and in other public places; - calling on people to bring plastic bags with them for rubbish.,Task 3 Proverb,Children are what the mothers are. 耳濡目染,身教言传。,Birds of a feather flock together. 物以类聚,人以群分。,A child is better unborn than untaught. 养不教,父之过。,Bread is the staff of life. 民以食为天。,In-Class Reading Latchkey Children Knock, Knock, Is Anybody Home?,Prompt (if necessary) the students to think about practical issues like child-care, location of the school, location of the apartment, work place, etc. Encourage the students to justify why both parents (or just one) accept the jobs.,Samples,It depends. If I were the wife, I would persuade my husband to accept the job. As for me, before making a final decision, I would take into consideration such factors as child-care facilities, location of the school, location of the apartment, etc. Both of us will accept the jobs. On the one hand, the jobs are challenging, which is good for our personal fulfillment. On the other, with the money we get, we could find a babysitter for our child or send him to a private school, where he may get better education. Neither of us will take the job. I think parents should spend more time with their children. A challenging, high-salary job means less time with your child. If we move to a city where we dont have any relatives, it would be even worse. A child who grows up with little care from parents or family is very likely to become a problem kid.,A. financial need,Reasons for mothers taking full-time jobs (Para. 1),B. career choices for personal fulfillment,Part I,A. late dinners,Consequences of mothers taking full-time jobs (Para. 2-3),B. emotional impact on mothers who feel guilty and children who feel hurt and resentful,Part II,A. productive period, sense of independence and responsibility, loved and trusted,Different reactions from latchkey children (Para. 4-6),B. frightening, lonely void, bitterness resentment and anger, abandoned,How to deal with the phenomenon of latchkey children (Para. 7-8),Part III,Part IV,All too often, however, the mothers arrive home exhausted (ll.17-18),在这个句子中,”exhausted”是过去分词作形容词用,表示伴随状况。类似的结构有: He came home very much depressed. She sat at the window sewing. He is lying at home sick.,Conversely, many latchkey children expressed much bitterness, resentment, and anger for being made to live in this fashion.,“make”在用作 “force someone to do something”这一意思时,主动语态为“make someone do something”,但在被动语态中则应该为 “be made to do something”,同样的用法也适合其它动词,如在“see someone do something中:e.g. He was seen to go into the pub with two other guys the other night.,e.g. She is made to look much older in the photo than she really is.,“Given” here is used as a preposition meaning “taking something into account” (考虑到,鉴于),e.g. 1) Given that there was so little time, I think theyve done a good job. 2) Given that the patients have some disabilities, we still try to enable them to be as independent as possible.,Given the reality of the situation, the question to ask is: how can an optimum plan be worked out to deal effectively with the situation. (ll56-57),“Given” can also be used as an adjective meaning “specified, fixed”(规定的,特定的),e.g. 1) The work must be done within the given time. 2) The rules are to be followed in any given situation.,accessibility n. the condition of being easy to obtain or use 可以得到,容易得到 There are other difficulties to be overcome in terms of the accessibility of certain products. 要得到某些货物仍然有其它的困难需要解决。 Theres growing public concern about the cost, quality and accessibility of health care. 公众对卫生保健的花费,质量
