The countrys eastern borders lie on the Indian Ocean.,II. Reading Skills: Predicting and Scanning,Predicting: Before reading, good readers think about what they are going to read. While reading, good readers think about what comes next. This helps them better understand what comes next.,III. Reading Comprehension,1. Read the text more carefully for the second time, then finish the comprehension exercise . 2. Answer the following question: What other cultural or exotic vacations would you like to experience?,IV. Vocabulary Skill: Organizing Vocabulary,One helpful way to remember new words is to group them into meaningful categories, for example, by part of speech or topic. Organizing your vocabulary can also help you to relate new vocabulary to other words you know.,V. Avoiding Cultural Taboos Some fundamental rules to make communication easier, and to make a trip to another country more enjoyable: 1.Never raise your voice 2.Consider the main religion of the country,3.Avoid topics of conversation that you think may be sensitive 4.Displaying affection in public is mostly considered taboo 5.Be careful in giving gifts and opening gifts 6.Always be tolerant of the local customs,VI. Discuss the following questions: 1. What are some of the ways that the tourist trade is promoted in your country? 2. What are some of the ways that too much tourism can impact a vacation locale?,VII. Homework 1. Imagine a foreigner is going to visit our country. Make a list of three acceptable and three taboo forms of behaviour this visitor should know about. 2. Imagine a friend is coming to visit your family. What would be an appropriate gift to your parents?,Background Knowledge No matter where you go in the world, there are a few universal manners all cultures appreciate and respect. Heres my list for the 10 most important: 1. Laugh - It may not sound like a manner, but having a sense of humour is the most important part of being respected by any culture. Someone who can laugh at themselves is loved everywhere youll go.,2. Respect - Have respect for the cultures you are in. Be curious about how the people live, and dont be judge mental. Respect everyone for their unique contributions. 3. Please and Thank You - This is a big one. A simple please and thank you, in any language, opens doors and shows your respect. Use these two words often, and your travels will go well.,4. Hello and Goodbye - It may not sound like a big deal, but acknowledging people with a hello and a goodbye gets conversations going. And conversations lead to new friends. 5. Friends first, Money Later - Become friends with whoever youre doing business with. Even if youre just buying bread or sitting down to a meal. Being friendly and actively looking for friendship establishes yourself as a good person.,6. Think about Others First - This does not have to be difficult. Little things, like not spitting in public help. Think about how you would feel if someone wants to do what you
