Fromm said: “People, whether human or personal, once fell in the world, he was thrown back to the instinct of the state as an established regular, fall into the volatile situation of being open no arrests, of which only one thing is certain inalienable; the end of the past and future - death. “Everything can be changed, only the fate of death is everlasting, because Death is the most essential provisions of individual existence.,1.1 The content and main images of English death poetry 1.1.1Suspicion of religious belief In the Western culture, peoples views on the “death“ has a close relationship with Christian. Christians view of human death is decided by the original sin of Adam and Eve. So it stands people through “salvation“ to seek the liberation of the soul, through the “abstinence“ to the eternal afterlife. Thus, the “salvation“, “soul“ and other beliefs, save the people from fear.,But Dickinson is not free from death in religion. Her poem of “Death“ is the description of dark and fear. This is mainly through the “mourning group“, “Drum“, “sky“, “World,“ “fly“ and other images to show.,I Felt A Funeral In My Brain By Emily Dickinson I felt a funeral in my brain, And mourners to and fro Kept treading ,treading, till it seemed That sense was breaking through. And when they all were seated, A service like a drum Kept beating, beating, till I thought My mind was going numb. And then I heard them lift a box And creak across my soul With those same boots of lead again, Then space began to toll, As all the heavens were a bell, And being but an ear, And I and silence some strange race Wrecked solitary here. And then a plank in reason broke, And I dropped down and down And hit a world at every plunge, And finished knowing,then.,1.1.2 Uncertainty of nature In general, in the Western poetry, poets can not find sustenance in religious beliefs to dilute(冲淡,削弱) the tremendous spirit pressure of the poets death and will seek solace(安慰) of nature, they compare the nature to the return of death, integrate with nature, and get the eternity in nature.,Because I could not stop for Death- Emily Dickinson Because I could not stop for Death- He kindly stopped for me- The Carriage held but just Ourselves- And Immortality. We slowly drove-He knew no haste And I had put away My labor and my Leisure too, For His Civility- We passed the School, where Children strove At Recess-in the Ring- We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain- We passed the Setting Sun- Or rather-He passed Us- The Dews drew quivering and chill- For only Gossamer, my Gown- My Tippet-only Tulle- We paused before a House that seemed A Swelling of the Ground- The Roof was scarcely visible- he Coraice-in the Ground- Since then-tis Centuries-and yet Feels shorter than the Day I first surmised the HorsesHeads Were toward Eternity-,因为我不能停下来等待死神 因为我不能停下来等待死神 他和善地停下来等我 那辆车只能容我们两个 还有不朽。 ,1.2 Analysis of Because I Could Not Stop for Death Emily Dickinson(1830-1886), the American best-known female poet ,was one of the foremost(居于首位的) authors in American literature. Emily Dickinson s poems, as well as Walt Whitmans, were considered as a part of “American renaissance”; they were regarded as pioneers of imagism. Both of them rejected custom and received wisdom and experimented with poetic style. She however differs from Whitman in a variety of ways. For one thing, Whitman seems to keep his eye on society at large; Dickinson explores the inner life of the individual. Whereas Whitman is “national” in his outlook, Dickinson is “regional” .,Analysis Analyzes the poem Because I Could Not Stop for Death, by Emily Dickinson. The use of remembered images of the past to clarify infinite conceptions through the establishment of a dialectical relationship between reality and imagination, the known and the unknown; The viewpoint of eternity; Understanding of the incomprehensible; The stages of existence.,The poem begins with a leisurely image. At first, the protagonist feels totally at ease and the usually frightening death is described as if a familiar friend, gentle and polite. Continuingly, the poem is developed upon a basic metaphor that life is a journey. It was truly rather old a comparison, but Dickinson enriched it with her creativity and imagination: “School, where Children strove“ -ch
