He is said to be “undersized”, with “short legs” and a “round stomach”. The issue here is not the accuracy of Tolstoys descriptionit seems not that far off from historical accounts but his choice of facts: Other things that could be said of the man are not said. We are meant to understand the difference of a warring commander in the body of a fat little Frenchman. Tolstoys Napoleon could be any man wandering in the streets and putting a little of powdered tobacco up his noseand that is the point. It is a way the novelist uses to show the moral nature of a character. And it turns out that, as Tolstoy has it, Napoleon is a crazy man. In a scene in Book Three of War and Peace, the wars having reached the critical year of 1812, Napoleon receives a representative from the Tsar(沙皇), who has come with peace terms. Napoleon is very angry: Doesnt he have more army? He, not the Tsar, is the one to make the terms. He will destroy all of Europe if his army is stopped. “That is what you will have gained by engaging me in the war!” he shouts. And then, Tolstoy writes, Napoleon “walked silently several times up and down the room, his fat shoulders moving quickly.”Still later, after reviewing his army amid cheering crowds, Napoleon invites the shaken Russian to dinner. “He raised his hand to the Russians face,” Tolstoy writes, and “taking him by the ear pulled it gently.” To have ones ear pulled by the Emperor was considered the greatest honor and mark of favor at the French court. “Well, well, why dont you say anything?” said he, as if it was ridiculous in his presence to respect any one but himself, Napoleon.Tolstoy did his research, but the composition is his own.【语篇解读】这是一篇议论文。 1Napoleon was angry when receiving the Russian representative because Ahe thought he should be the one to make the peace termsBthe Tsars peace terms were hard to acceptCthe Russians stopped his military movementDhe didnt have any more army to fight with【解析】推理判断题。 C2What did Napoleon expect the Russian representative to do?ATo walk out of the room in anger.BTo show agreement with him.CTo say something about the Tsar.DTo express his admiration.【解析】推理判断题。 B3Tolstoy intended to present Napoleon as a man who is Aillmannered in dealing with foreign guestsBfond of showing off his iron willCdetermined in destroying all of EuropeDcrazy for power and respect【解析】细节理解题。 A4What does the last sentence of the passage imply?AA writer doesnt have to be faithful to his findings.BA writer may write about a hero in his own way.CA writer may not be responsible for what he writes.DA writer has hardly any freedom to show his feelings.【解析】句义理解题。 A、C两项否定了“did his research” ,D项否定了“the composition is his own”。 BBJK Rowling, the Harry Potter author, has signed a deal with Little Brown Company. To publish her first ever novel for adults, which is set to become one of the most anticipated (期望的) book in years. The deal means that Rowlings longstanding relationship with Bloomsbury, the Londonbased publisher that launched (发行) the Harry Potter books, has come to an end, at least in terms of new works by the author.Rowling is keeping her fans guessing about the characters and plot of her new book. She only said that the new novel will be nothing like the Harry Potter series, which was sold over 30 million copies in the UK alone. She thought that with the move from childrens to adult fiction, a switch to a new publisher seemed like a natural and reasonable step. She said, “Although Ive enjoyed writing it every bit as much, this book will be very different from the Harry Potter series. The freedom to explore a new field is a gift that Harrys success has brought me.”Ian Rankin, the Edinburghbased author whose highlysuccessful detective novels are also set in the city suggested Rowlings book will be a crime novel.“Wouldnt it be funny if JK Rowlings first novel for adults turned out to be a crime story set in Edinburgh?” he said.Industry insiders guessed that the deal
