,Part 5: Advanced Manufacturing Technology,Objective,After completing this part, you should be able to:,1.get a good general understanding of advanced manufacturing technology;,2. enlarge your vocabulary related to advanced manufacturing technology;,3. improve your reading skills in mechanical engineering.,5.1 Introduction,5.1.1 What is the advanced manufacturing technology?,Advanced manufacturing technologies are a progressive manufacturer of machined products, specializing in production CNC Turning and Milling. Advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) represents a wide variety of mainly computer-based systems, which provide adopting firms with the potential to improve manufacturing operations greatly.,5.1.2 The main content of advanced manufacturing technologies,Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) Virtual Manufacturing System (VM) Computer-Integrated Manufacturing Systems (CIMS) Reconfigurable Manufacturing System Grid Manufacturing Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM) Engineering Systems Materials Resource Planning Systems (MRPS) Automated Materials Handling Systems,5.2 Advanced Manufacturing System,5.2.1 Flexible Manufacturing System 1. Introduction A flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is a manufacturing system in which there is some amount of flexibility that allows the system to react in the case of changes, whether predicted or unpredicted. Figure 5.1-5.2 illustrate a flexible manufacturing workshop and a manufacturing machine tool.,Figure 5.1 Flexible Manufacturing workshop,Figure 5.2 Flexible manufacturing machine tools,2. main advantages of an FMS,Reduced manufacturing times; Lower cost per unit produced; Greater labor productivity; Greater machine efficiency; Improved quality; Increased system reliability; Reduced parts inventories; Adaptability to CAD/CAM operations; Shorter lead times.,3. Disadvantages,Cost to implement; Substantial pre-planning required.,5.2.2 Virtual Manufacturing System,1. What is Virtual Manufacturing?,Virtual Manufacturing(VM) is an integrated, synthetic manufacturing environment exercise to enhance all levels of decision and control in manufacturing enterprise.,Virtual Manufacturing is the use of computer models and simulations of manufacturing processes to aid in design and production of manufactured products.,Figures 5.3-5.5 illustrate construction of a virtual reality system, a data glove and virtual glasses.,Figure 5.4 Data glove,Figure 5.3 Construction of Virtual reality System,Figure 5.5 Virtual glasses,Lawrence Associates have identified three different types of Virtual Manufacturing paradigms that use Virtual Reality technology to provide the integrated environment.,1. Design-centered VM: provides designers with the tools to design products that meet design criteria such as design for X; 2. Production-centered VM: provides the means to develop and analyze alternative production and process plans; 3. Control-centered VM:allows the evaluation of product design, production plans, and control strategy and a means to iteratively improve all of them through the simulation of the control process.,2. What Is the Significance of VM?,VM aims at providing an integrated environment for a number of isolated manufacturing technologies such as Computer Aided Design, Computer Aided Manufacturing, and Computer Aided Process Planning, thus allowing multiple users to concurrently carry out all or some of these functions without the need for being physically close to each other.,Figure 5.6 The immersion in a car manufacturing,A process planning engineer and a manufacturing engineer can evaluated and provide feedback to a product designer, who may be physically located in another state or country, at the same time as the design is being conceived.,For example:,3. Application of VM,Figure 5.7 shows the application of VM encompass the entire life cycle of a product.,Figure 5.7 Application of Virtual technology in a room decor,Figure 5.9 Application of Virtual technology in the game,Figure 5.8 Application of Virtual technology in the game,Figure 5.11 An example of virtual reality in military army,Figure 5.10 An example of virtual reality in military army,The Virtual Manufacturing can be used in a wide variety of manufacturing systems contexts, and can be defined as the modeling of manufacturing systems and components with the effective use of computers, audiovisual and sensory displays to simulate or design alternatives for a manufacturing environment.,5.2.3 Computer-Integrated Manufacturing System,1. Introduction,Figure 5.12 “Islands of automation“,Figure 5.13 Connecting “islands of automation“,CIMS (Computer Integrated Manufacturing System) is a thought way for unitive control and best efficiency of the manufacturing by using of computer technology to integrate the main taches of enterprises, such as manufacturing, prosecution, management, planning, product design, machining, distribution, and service.,The “integrated“ can include Information I
