Module 5 Unit 2 Word powerWords and expressions in this section are mostly related to environment. Some of them are compound words and some are formed by adding prefix “eco-”Teaching aims1. to enlarge students vocabulary about environment .2. to give students chances of applying some new words to practical use.3. to encourage students to do what they can to protect the environment.Teaching procedureStep 1 Warming upHelp students review the ways of forming new words. That is, add prefix or suffix to a word or put two or more words together to create a compound word.Step 2 Reading the brochureA. Give students two minutes to read the brochure and ask them the following questions:1. What is Ecoville?2. Can you guess the meaning of “fossil fuels”? What belongs to fossil fuels? Give some examples.3. According to the brochure, what kind of tourists will be particularly interested in this hotel?B. Find out the words which have the prefix eco-Suggested answers: ecotourist / ecosystem / eco-friendly washing powder C. Divide the students into groups of four and hold a small competition for Part D. Ask them to think of as many words as possible beginning with eco-.Sample answers: eco-activity / ecology/ ecodevelopment / ecotourism / eco-friendly / eco-disaster etc.Step 3 Discussing the pictures1. Ask students to go through the compound words and guess their meanings.2. Use these words to label the six pictures.(If the students have some difficulty in doing these two parts, use some pictures and English explanation to help them.) (acid rain) (clear-cut logging) (ozone layer) (opencast mining) (global warming) (slash and burn farming)3. Let students discuss the following questions in teams. (hold a competition)1) What causes acid rain? What damage will it cause?2) Whats clear-cut logging ? Whats the result? 3) What do you know has happened to ozone layer? Do you know any information about it?4) Whats opencast mining ? What will happen after it? Can you give one example?5) What causes global warming? What are the three terrible results global warming will bring about?6) What is the result of slash and burn farming ? Do you think it still exists in most rural areas in West China? Why?Step 4 Finishing the advertisement 1. Give students some time to read the words and the brochure. Let students read after these words if necessary.2. Ask students to finish the advertisement using the words from the previous page. Then check the answers.Step 5 Discussion Are there other things that are bad for our environment?How can we live in a environmentally friendly way in our daily life?Step 6 Homework1. Review the words mentioned in the class.2. Work in groups to find out other compound words related to environment.
