新课标人教版课件系列,高中英语 选修(模块)8-2.3,Listening & Speaking,Is cloning cruel? Listen and see whether you agree with Xiao Qing or Mary. 1. Read these statements before listening. Tick those that you hear. Cloning will bring dead pets to life. There were 627 experiments before Dolly was successfully clone, Cloning may produce medicine or even organs of a human body to cure serious illnesses. Dolly was “middle-aged” when she was born. So your grandmother would be able to start her life all over again and live to an old age.,2. Listen to the tape again.,1 cruel to animals,1 scientists are doing a wonderful job,2 makes them do unnatural things,2 may bring back extinct animals,3 it is a “dead end”,3 problems because it is a new science,4 clone born at age of “mother”,4 scientists need encouragement,5 weakens the species,5 it may provide medicine for illnesses,3. Whose ideas do you agree with? Get ready to have a class discussion. Think about the reasons for your point of view. Use your own ideas as well as those in the text. These words and phrases on page 18 may be useful for you during the discussion:,Thats a good idea. I cannot accept your argument because I support because No, I cant agree with because I agree withbecause. How can you believe that?,Your argument has convinced me because I would like to agree with you but I dont care for your ideas because No, that is not reasonable because. Thats a great idea! Your ideas sound very encouraging to me.,Listening Text,IS CLONING CRUEL? Xiao Qing and Mary Brown are discussing whether cloning is cruel to the animals. MB: Xiao Qing, do you think cloning is cruel?,XQ: What do you mean by that? The scientists are doing a wonderful job and soon they may be able to bring back extinct animals or ever peoples favourite pets back to life. MB: Yes, Qing, I know. But doesnt that seem strange to you? Is it worth it? It took 276 experiments before,Dolly was successfully cloned. Think of all those live cells and eggs that died in order for Dolly to be born. I dont approve of that! XQ: But Mary, be reasonable. Isnt it always like that with a new science? This is the way you learn to do,things better. Its just that this one deals with living things. MB: I suppose so but they make the animals do unnatural things. One poor cow was made to give birth to a bison. What was the poor creature to think when is saw its baby?,XQ: I dont quite understand why so many people are against cloning. I think the scientists need a little encouragement. They have done some amazing things and think of the benefits. Producing animals that are an exact copy of the original may help medical science produce, medicines or even organs for serious illnesses. MB: Yes, Ive heard all that. I agree with it but I dont agree with the methods. I dont think cloning is good for animals. XQ: Why not?,MB: Well, I think its a dead end. Dolly the sheep was “middle-aged” when she was born because her DNA came from a middle-aged “mother”. Cloning your grandmother would mean the new baby started life as an old lady!,XQ: Are you sure? I never thought of that! MB: And it also weakens the species. Clones mean there is less variety in the species and so illnesses will become more common and the animals may die out.,XQ: Oh dear! And that was just what you and I were trying to avoid. I see I shall have to look at this whole cloning questing again!,Listening on P54,1).How would you treat human clones? 2). Do you think they should have legal and political rights, such as getting married or voting?,3). Do you think they are separate people or part of the original donor?,1. Discuss these questions.,1. Clare thinks human cloning will come soon. 2. The clone is the same as the original donor. 3. Parents who are unable to have their own children may want to buy cloned babies.,2. Tick the correct ones.,4. Clare believes human cloning will cause unexpected problems. 5. Wang Qiao thinks it is moral to clone babies for parents who cannot have children.,Answer key for Exercise 3: B C A,Listening text,IS HUMAN CLONING A GOOD IDEA? Wang Qiao is talking to Clare Peters about human cloning.,WQ: What do you think about human cloning, Clare? CP: I dont know what to think. But I suppose itll come one of these, days. I think there are many problems that nobody has thought of yet. WQ: What do you mean by that? CP: Well, a clone will be an exact copy of the original donor. Right? WQ: Yes, so what? CP: Well, whats the relationship, between the clone and his original donor? WQ: I suppose they must be like one person. The clone is the same as his original donor. CP: Lets suppose that you take a baby to a laboratory to be cloned. Does it matter if the, laboratory returns you the real baby and one clone or two clones? WQ: Yes, it does. But how could this possible happen? CP: Well, the scientists may get confused. WQ: My goodness. Surely they would notice if there is an age-gap,between the donor
