American TV series, as the special medium for cultural exchange with other countries, can make people know more about foreign culture and history. But the language barrier is likely to make the target language audience misunderstand the film and can hinder the development of cross-cultural communication. However, functional equivalence theory asks the fact that the target language readers can have the same feeling with the source language readers. Therefore, in order to make the audience have a better understanding of American TV series and know of the world outside, it is very necessary to use the functional equivalence theory in subtitle translation.Owing to the particularity of film translation, the thesis is to put forward an idea that when translating, Nidas functional equivalence theory should be applied to subtitle translation which is much better than “keeping faith”, “equivalence” and “equivalent”. To explain more fully the effectiveness of subtitle translation under equivalence theory, this article is to undertake a comprehensive analysis of the subtitle translation of Beauty and the Beast under functional equivalence theory. The analysis is to show that when translating, using functional equivalence theory is quite efficient so that the audience can have a better understanding of American TV series. The paper is to explore the feasibility and necessity of subtitle translation in Beauty and the Beast from linguistic and stylistic level under functional equivalence theory. IntroductionNowadays, with globalization of the world economy and the phenomena of colonial emancipation, there are more and more chances for us to share various resources with each other. Besides other things, multimedia resources are popular to numerous of Chinese people. As a main form of multimedia resources, not only can foreign TV series entertain and relax audiences, but also enrich their knowledge by having an instant access to different culture and lifestyle.In recent years, an growing number of foreign movies and TV series have been introduced into China, especially those imported from America. Even young people in China consider watching American TV series as an elegant and refined taste for fashion. However, most audiences rely on the translated versions to understand and appreciate foreign TV series such as Beauty and the Beast. Therefore, a further study of subtitle translation for English audiovisual products is urgently needed in market, which plays a dispensable role in the cross-cultural communication. Owing to the language barrier, audiences often misunderstand the essence of TV series and impede the development of cross-cultural communication. However, Functional Equivalence Theory concentrates on receptor response, measuring translating by whether the receptors of the translated text have equivalent response as the original receptors, and points out that the essence of translation is to reproduce the source text with the closest natural equivalence in the
