Section Welcome to the unit & Reading PrereadingWhat do you know about “a package tour”?When did the first Taiwan package tour open?Chen Xida from Xiamen, Fujian Province has traveled to Taiwan three times. Every time he had to take a package tour. This used to be the only way for many Chinese mainland tourists to visit Taiwan. But individual (个人的) tourism is becoming easier. By the end of this year, residents (居民) of 10 more Chinese mainland cities will be able to visit Taiwan as individual tourists, thanks to a deal between the Chinese mainlands Association for Tourism Exchange Across the Taiwan Strait (海峡) and Taiwans Taiwan Strait Tourism Association on April 1. The latest cities include Tianjin, Chongqing, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Jinan, Xian, Fuzhou and Shenzhen. The first Taiwan package tour opened on July 4, 2008. However, tourists often complained about tight schedules (紧张的行程) and began to ask for a “deeper travel experience”Over 57,000 residents from Beijing, Shanghai and Xiamen have visited Taiwan as individual tourists since June 28, 2011, when Taiwan first allowed individual tourists from these three cities to visit. The deal to extend (扩展) the individual tour city list will boost (促进) the travel business on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and benefit travelers.“Traveling as individuals will allow mainlanders to discover real life in Taiwan. It is the right direction for cross Strait tourism,” Dai Bin, president of the mainlandbased China Tourism Academy, told Xinhua.According to Taiwans mainland affairs (事务) department, more than 3 million mainland tourists visited Taiwan between July 2008 and December 2011, bringing more than DS| 5 billion in profit to the Taiwanese sightseeing sector (部门). Meanwhile, the number of Taiwanese visitors to the Chinese mainland in a year hit the 5 million mark in 2010.
