视听说第五册教师用书 Unit 5 Philosophy 视听说第五册教师用书 Unit 5 Philosophy Part One Lead-in Background knowledge Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems, such as those connected with existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. It is distinguished from other ways of addressing such problems by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on rational argument. Teachers are expected to make the students understand some branches of philosophy, and let them know philosophy is quite close to our daily life. ACTIVITY 1 LISTENING Directions: Listen to the recording and answer the following questions according to what you hear. Tapescript: What is Philosophy? The word “philosophy“ comes from the Greek, which literally means “love of wisdom“. There are at least two senses in which the term philosophy is used. In the more formal sense, philosophy is an academic discipline focusing on the fields of metaphysics, logic, ethics, epistemology, and aesthetics. In the more informal sense, philosophy is an attitude to life or way or principle of living whose focus is on resolving the most basic existential questions about the human condition.
