A Letter to August
Priscilla and I wrote our newly-born daughter August a letter about the world we hope she grows up in, and also hoping she doesn’t grow up too fast.
Dear August,
Welcome to the world! Your mom and I are so excited to see who you will (1) .
When your sister was (2) , we wrote a letter about the world we hoped she and now you will grow up in – a world with better education, (3) diseases, stronger communities, and greater equality. Your (4) should live better lives than ours, and we have a(n) (5) to do our part to make that happen. (6) headlines often (7) what’s wrong, we still believe these (8) trends will win out. We’re (9) about your generation and the future.
But (10) write about growing up, we want to talk about (11) .
Childhood is magical. You only get to be a child once, so don’t spend it (12) too much about the future. We’ll do everything we (13) can to (14) the world is a better place for you and all children in your generation.
The world can be a serious place. That’s why it’s (15) to make time to go outside and play. You will be (16) when you’re older, so I hope you take time to (17) all the flowers and put all the leaves you want in your bucket now. I hope you sleep soundly and take frequent (18) . And I hope even in your (19) you can feel how much we love you.
August, we love you so much and we’re so excited to go on this (20) with you. We wish you a life of joy, love and the same hope you give us.
Love,
Mom and Dad

Dear Strangers,
I remember you. Eighteen months ago, when my cellphone rang, you were walking into Whole Foods (21) to do your grocery shopping, just as I had been only minutes before you. But I had already (22) my cart full of groceries in the entryway, for my brother was on the other end of the (23) telling me my father had (24) his own life early that morning.
I started to cry and scream as my whole body (25) . I fell to the floor under the (26) of what I had just learned. You could have kept on walking, (27) my cries, but you didn't. You could have simply stopped and stared at my ( (29) of pain, but you didn't. Instead, you surrounded me as I yelled (30) my sobs, “My father killed himself. He's dead.〞
I remember one of you asked for my phone. You needed my husband's name as you searched through my (31) . I remember that I could hear your (32) as you tried to reach my husband for me, leaving an (33) message for him to call me. I recall hearing you discuss among yourselves who would drive me home in my car and who would (34) that person back to the store. You didn't even know one another, and you came around me with the common (35) —to help.
In my (36) , I told you that I had a friend who worked at Whole Foods, and one of you brought her to me. And I even recall as I sat with her, one of you (37) a gift card for meals to Whole Foods. That gift card helped to (38) my family when the idea of cooking was so far (39) my emotional reach.
I never saw you after that. But I know this to be true: Because you (40) out to help, you offered a ray of light in the most (41) moment I've ever experienced. I will never, ever forget you.
