(10 points) My father was a highly educated, intelligent gentleman. He could debate or discuss for 1 on almost any topic and hold your attention in the process. I thought there was 2 he wasnt able to do.A few days 3 my younger brothers 7th birthday, Dad planned to put together a shiny new 4 as a special birthday surprise. After nearly an hour of 5 the instructions, Dad was still unable to put the new bike together. Later he folded up the paper of instructions, 6 his tool box, and decided to take the bike back to the local toy store and pay extra money to have it 7 assembled(组装) there. Then, a(n) 8 came to him, as he called out to Lovett, the quiet little man who mowed our grassland.Lovett, have you ever assembled a boys bicycle? As Lovett walked towards the bike, Dad handed him the paper of instructions. Lovett handed it 9 to him, saying, No, thanks. I cant read. When you cant read, you have to 10 . Less than 15 minutes later, the new bicycle was fully assembled, with no spare parts 11 . Dad shook Lovetts hand , patted him on the back, thanked him and hid the bike.On the night after my brother 12 his simly new gift. Dad announced at the family dinner table 13 had happened several days earlier. He took great delight in telling it 14 -he used it as an example of thinking. He did not 15 illiteracy (文盲) , but strongly taught us to use our 16 . The joke was on my father, 17 he was able to turn it into a learning tool, and I liked him even 18 after the incident. I also gained a respect for Lovett. Answer the questions below each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on the ANSWER SHEET. (40 points)Text 1 What will power your house in the future? Nuclear wind or solar power? According to scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) in the US, it might be artificial leaves.Natural leaves are able to change sunlight and water into energy. It is known asphotosynthesis(光合作用). Now researchers have found a way to imitate this process. The artificial leaf developed by Daniel Nocera and his colleagues at MIT can be seen as a specialsilicon chip withcatalysts(催化剂). Similar to natural leaves, it can split water into hydrogenand oxygen when put into a bucket of water. The hydrogen and oxygen gases are then stored in a fuelcell(电池), using those two materials to produce electricity, located either on top of a house or beside the house.Though the leaf is only about the shape of a poker card, scientists claimed that it is promising to be aninexpensive source of electricity in developing countries. “One can imagine villages in India and Africa not long from now purchasing an affordable basic power system based on this technology” said an American scientist, Nocera. An artificial leaf is not a new idea. The first artificial leaf was invented in 1997 but was too expensiveand unstable for practical use. The new leaf, however, is made of cheap materials, easy to use and highly stable. In laboratory studies, Nocera showed that an artificial leaf could operatecontinuously for at least 45 hours. The wonderful improvements come from Noceras recent discovery of several powerful new, inexpensive catalysts. These catalysts make the energytransformation inside the leaf moreefficient with water and sunlight. Right now the new leaf is about 10 times more effective at carrying out photosynthesis than a natural one. Besides, the device can run in whatever water is available. This is important for some countries that dont have access to pure water.Hopefully, each home could have access to th
