Structures1.be able to do sth. 1)概念:be able to表示“能,会(做)某事”,在表示能力时和can可以通用。但与can相比,be able to具有各种时态的不同形式,还可与除了can以外的各种情态动词连用,主语一般有生命。2)例句:(1)Are you able to speak English fluently?= Can you speak English fluently?(2)My father was able to swim when he was only four.= My father could swim when he was only four.(3)He wont be able to take part in the next sports meeting.注意:be able to 的过去时was / were able to常表示“成功做到”,即succeeded in doing sth. 或managed to do sth.的意思,这时它和could不能通用。例如: Although the man had little money, he was able to finish his trip by asking for free lifts.= Although the man had little money, he managed to finish his trip by asking for free lifts.= Although the man had little money, he succeeded in finishing his trip by asking for free lifts.虽然那个人没什么钱,但他还是用请求免费搭车的方法完成了他的旅程。2.ought to do sth.表示“应该做某事”,相当于should do sth.,例如:You ought to listen to your teachers carefully.People ought not / oughtnt to smoke in public.Jack ought to help his brother with his study, oughtnt he?
