Review the names of the animals.T: In the last period we learnt the names of some animals. Now lets do some revision. Show the students the animal pictures one by one. T: Please look at the pictures one by one and you have to tell me the name of the animal in the picture. OK?S: Yes.Show the picture with a panda in it.T: Look at the first picture. What is this?S1: Its a panda.Show the second picture with an elephant in it.2. Review the conversation learnt in the last period.T: Pretend that we are going to a zoo today. What animal do you want to see best?S4: I want to see the lions. T: Why do you want to see the lions?S4: Because they are cute.Give more chances to more students to practice talking about the animals and expressing why they like the animals.Step II Listening (2a, 2b)1. First ask the students to listen and fill in the chart in Activity 2a. T: This is a recording about animals. Look at the words on the right of the chart in 2a. The people on the recording use these words as they talk about the animals. You will have to write the names of the animals you hear on the recording on the two blank lines. Play the recording for the first time. Ask the students to listen carefully and write down the animals. Ask the students to pay attention to the words in the box in Activity 2b.Ask the students to pay attention to the conversation in Activity 2b.T: Please look at the conversation in Activity 2b. There are six blank lines in it. I will read the conversation to you. I will say blank each time I come to a blank line.Then ask the students to fill in the blanks. T: Now you will hear the conversation again. And then you have to fill in the blank lines using the words from the box. Some words can be used more than one time. After that, check the answers. Then ask the students to listen to and repeat the dialogue after the recording. T: Now listen to the dialogue and repeat after the recording. Do like this: The girls repeat after the girl, and the boys repeat after the boy. Then change your roles and repeat. A sample: Girls: Lets see the koalas.Boys: Why do you like koalas?.Step III Pairwork (2c)1. Ask the students to work in pairs, and ask and answer about animals they know.T: Look at 2c. Work in pairs. Role play the conversation as shown on the right. One of you asks, and the other answers. You can use the words in Boxes 1, 2 and 3 in your conversation. Before you start, read the example dialogue first. Sample conversations:S1: Do you like penguins?S2: Yes, I do. S1: Why?S2: Because they are very cute.2. Further practice Ask the students to practice: Why? Because they are .1) I like dolphins because they are cute.S1: Do you like dolphins?S2: Yes, I do.S1: Why?S2: Because theyre cute.2) I like dogs because they are friendly.S1: Do you like dogs?S2: Yes, I do.S1: Why?S2: Because they are friendly.Step IV Grammar FocusAsk the students to read the sentences in the grammar box and sum up the sentence structure. T: Now read aloud the sentences in the grammar box. Then write down the sentence structure in you exercise books. Show the following. 1. Why do you / they / your parents like _?Because theyre very / kind of cute / interesting / smart / fun.2. Why does he / she / Mark / your sister like _?Because theyre very / kind of cute / interesting / smart / funAsk the students to pay attention to the bold type words in the above form. Ask them to explain how to use “why” and “because”. Practice suggestion: Ask the students to work in groups and write down their own opinions on the animals in Activity 1a on a piece of paper, show their work to the group members. And then ask and answer questions. Sample dialogue 1:S1: Why do you like tigers?S2: Because theyre very cute. Why do you like elephants?.Explain to the students the usages of “why” and “because”.T: If someone asks you “Why .”, you have to use “Because” to begin with.Ask the students to say the difference between “very old” and “kind of old”.Step V HomeworkAsk the students to do the following.1. Make similar dialogues according to the conversation in 2c. 2. Use the words in the box in Activity 2b to make sentences.3. Ask the students to find more description words about animals.
