AATCC Test Method 118-2013Oil Repelle ncy: Hydrocarb on Resista nee TestDeveloped in 1966 by AATCC Committee RA56; reaffirmed 1972, 1975, 1978, 1983, 1989, 2002, 2012; editorially revised 1985, 1986, 1990, 1995, 2004, 2008, 2010; revised 1992, 2007, 2013; editorially revised and reaffirmed 1997. Tech ni cally equivale nt to ISO 14419.heat, sparks and ope n flame. Use with adequate ven tilati on. Avoid prolon ged breath ing of vapor or eon tact with skin. Do not take in ter nally.4.3 Exposure to chemicals used in this procedure must be eon trolled at or below levels set by gover nmen tal authorities e.g., Occupati onal Safety and Health6.4 Laboratory gloves (ge neral purpose is sufficie nt).7. Test Specimens7.1 Test two specimens of the same size from each sample. Specime n size should be sufficient to allow for the com-1. Purpose and Scope1.1 This test method is used to detect the prese nee of a fluorochemical fini sh, or other compou nds capable of impart ing a low en ergy surface, on all types of fabrics, by evaluating the fabric sto wetti ng using a selected series of liquid hydrocarb ons of differe nt surface tensions.2. PrincipleAdministration s (OSHA) permissible explete range of test liquids to be evaluated, posure limits (PEL) as found in 29 CFR 1910.1000; see web site: www.osha.gov for latest version. In addition, the Ameri- ean Conference of Gover nmen tal In dustrial Hygie nists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit V alues (TLVs) comprised of time rewetghted averages (TLV-TWA), short term exposure limits (TLV-STEL) and ceili ng limits (TLV-C) are recomme nded as a gen eral guide for air eon tam inant exposure which should be met (see 12.1).but shall be no smaller than 20X20 cm (8 X8 in.) and n o larger tha n 20 X40 cm (8 X16 in.). Specime ns from sample to sample should be the same size. Con diti on the test specime ns for a mini mum of 4 h at 21 士 1 C (70 2 F) and 65 2% Fprior to testing (see 12.7).8. Procedure2.1 Drops of sta ndard test liquids, consist ing of a selected series of hydrocarbons with vary ing surface tensions, are placed on the fabric surface and observed for wett ing, wick ing and con tact an gle. The oil repelle ncy grade is the highest n umbered test liquid which does not wet the fabric surface.5. Uses and Limitations3. Terminology3.1 grade, n. n textile testing , the symbol for any step of a multistep sta n- dard refere nee scale for a quality characteristic.NOTE: The grade is assigned to test specime ns exhibit ing a degree of the quality comparable to that step of the sta ndard.3.2 oil repellency, n. n textiles, the characteristic of a fiber, yarn or fabric whereby it resists wetting by oily liquids.5.1 This test method is not inten ded to give an absolute measure of the resistance of the fabric to staining by all oily materials. Other factors, such as compo- siti on and viscosity of the oily substances, fabric construction, fiber type, dyes, other fini shi ng age nts, etc., also influe nee sta in resista nee. This test can, however, provide a rough in dex of oil sta in resista nee, in that gen erally the higher the oil repelle ncy grade, the better resista nee to sta ining by oily materials, especially liquid oil substa nces. This is particularly true when comparing various finishes for a given fabric.6. Apparatus and Materials (see 12.2)4. Safety Precautions6.1 Test liquids prepared and n umbered according to Table I (see 12.3, 12.4 and 12.5).6.2 Droppi ng bottles (see 12.4).6.3 White AATCC Textile Blotti ng Paper (see 12.6).NOTE: These safety precauti ons are for in formati on purposes only. The precauti ons are an cillary to the test ing procedures and are not inten ded to be all in clu-.sive. It is the user s responsibility to use Table I Standard Test Liquidssafe and proper tech ni ques in han dli ngaatcc OHmaterials in this test method. Man ufac-Repellencyturers MUST be eon sulted for specificGrade Numberdetails such as material safety data sheets and other manufacturer s recommendations. All OSHA standards and rules must also be eon sulted and followed.4.1 Good laboratory practices should be followed. Wear safety glasses and impervious gloves whe n han dli ng test liquids in all laboratory areas.4.2 The hydrocarb ons specified in this method are flammable.
