Lead-in1. According to the reading text, we have learnt some great athletes, such as Deng Yaping, Michael Jordan, Zhang Ning and so on. Ask students who they like best and why. Let students say sth about their achievements.2. When the student say sth about Liu Xiang, show the picture of him, and ask students to use some words to describe him.Answers: He is a handsome young man.He was the first Asian to win the gold medal for the mens 110-metre hurdles in the Olympic Games.He is a hard-working athlete. He is a well-trained runner.3. Let the students study the italicized words and ask them two questions:（1） Do you know the meanings of the words?（2） Do you know how the words are made?4. Give them a few minutes to think. Compound words1. Tell students that the above words are called compound words. The winning group is the one that comes up with the most words.3. Have students study the words that they have listed and then read the words on page26 to understand the formation rules of compound adjectives and compound nouns.
