Corpusbased Study on comparative usages of Synonym START、BEGIN【Abstract】SynonymhasalwaysbeenaforEnglishlearners.HowtograspthecorrectmeaningandusageofsynonymisacontinuousconcernofEnglishlearning.Acorpus-basedstudyisconductedonthecomparativeusagesofSynonymSTART/BEGIN，aimingtoofferanewwaytostudysynonyms.【Keywords】Corpus-based；Synonym1.IntroductionTheabundantsynonymsinEnglishhelpEnglishspeakersexpressthoughtsandfeelingsaccurately，however，synonymhasbeenconsideredasatoughissueinlearningEnglish，especiallyforL2learners.Traditionally，secondlanguagelearnersdiscriminatesynonymbythedefinitionsindictionarieswhichmerelyofferentriesandexamples，andteachersexplanationswhicharemainlybasedonexperiences.Theappearanceofcorpuslinguisticsprovidesanewperspectivetostudysynonym.Throughanumberofstatisticaldataanalysis，L2learnerscanrealizesthespecificdifferencesofsynonymsinconcretecontexts.basedoncorpuslinguistics，thepaperplanstoanalyzeapairofsynonymSTARTBEGINthroughquantitativeandqualitativeanalysis.ThroughstatisticalretrievalofFLOB，theauthoraimstorevealthediscriminationsofSTARTBEGINinordertohelpL2learnersunderstandthedifferentusesofSTARTBEGINandalsoofferanewperspectivetostudysynonyms.2.LiteraturereviewIntheeyesofordinarypeople，ithasoftenbeentakenforgrantedthatSTARTBEGINcanbeusedinterchangeably.However，linguistsathomeandabroadhadmadeplentyofresearchesbasedoncorporaandtheresultsshowedthattheusagesofSTARTBEGINstillhaddifferencesinsomeaspects.TherepresentativeresearcheshaddonebyDouglasBiberandChristianMair.InCorpusLinguistics，DouglasBiber2000hadcomparedtheusagesofSTARTBEGINandfoundthatBEGINwasmoreinclinedtoexistwithtodowhileSTARTwasmoreoftenusedwiththeotherthreestructures.Inaddition，ChristianMair2020hadmadeacomparisonofSTARTBEGINinhispaperfromtheperspectiveofgrammarandsociallinguistics.DomesticlinguistsalsohaddoneamountofresearchesaboutSTARTBEGIN，suchasLu2020etc.ThepreviouslinguistsmostcompareSTARTBEGINintwodomains，andtheinternaldifferencesamongtheusagesofSTRATandBEGINisrarelymentioned.ThusthispaperaimstorevealthedifferencesofSTARTBEGINandtheinternaldifferencesamongtheusagesofSTARTandBEGIN.3.DataandMethodologyThedataofthispapercomesfromFLOBFreiburg-LOBCorpusofBritishEnglishwhichconsistsof500textsofBritishmagazinesandnewspapersin1991and1992.Withavocabularyof10，000，000words，FLOBisquiterepresentativeinstudyingEnglishlinguisticfeaturesandusages.Here，theFLOBcorpushasalreadybeentagged.MonoconcareusedinthepapertoprocessthefrequenciesofSTARTBEGINandtheirfourgrammaticalcombinationsrespectively.Chi-squaretestisadoptedtoexaminewhethersignificantdifferenceexistsintheusagesofSTART，BEGINandbetweenSTARTBGEGIN.Chi-squarevaluewhichiscalculatedbysoftwareSPSSisthestandardfortestingifasignificantdifferenceisemerged.Whensig.0.05，significantdifferenceexist；whensig.0.05，thereisnosignificantdifference.4.ResultsandAnalysis4.1StatisticalanalysisofSTARTBEGINAccordingtothecorpusdata，theauthorfindsthatSTARTBEGINhavefourgrammaticalcombinations，namely，STARTBEGIN+todo；STARTBEGIN+doing；STARTBEGIN+noun；STARTBEGINasViintransitiveverb.WithMonoconcthefrequenciesofSTARTanditsfourgrammaticalcombinationsinFLOBarecountedinTable1.AlthoughthefrequencyofSTARTasVicannotbecountedbyMonoconc，thedatacanbeobtainedbydeductingthefrequencyofotherthreeusagefromthewholefrequencyofSTART.Accordingtothestatisticresultofmonoconc，thetotalfrequencyofSTARTis317withSTART+todoaccountingfor48times，START+doing55times，START+noun13times，andSTARTasVi201times.Meanwhile，BEGINonlyappearsfor169timesincludingBEGIN+todo72times，BEGIN+doing2times，BEGIN+noun1timesandBEGINasVi94times.ForSTARTsfourusages，thechi-squarevalueis0.000TheChi-squarevalueofBEGINsfourusagesindicatesthatthemostpopularusagesofBEGINareBEGINasViandBEGIN+todo.AndBEGINisseldomusedinBEGIN+nounandBEGIN+doingstructure.Andthechi-squarevalueis0.0004.2ComparisonofSTARTBEGINIntheChi-squaretestofSTARTBEGIN，thechi-squarevalueis0.000WhenSTARTisusedasVi，itoftendescribestheinitiationofactionwhileBEGINasVialwaysdescribestheinitiationofaprocess.E.g.Workonthecomplex，whichwillinclude.，willstartinSeptember.Andnowfortheperformancetobegin.Inaddition，BEGINisrarelyusedinBEGIN+nounstructure，whileSTARTsometimescombineswithnoun.E.gTheywerethefirstcompanytostartproductioninNorthAmerica.Thearenahadstartedlifeasavasttubingwarehouse.5.ConclusionThroughstatisticalanalysis，significantdifferenceisfoundbetweentheusagesofSTARTBEGIN.TheresultsindicatethatBEGINismoreoftenusedinBEGIN+todostructureandusedasVi，whileSTARTismoreinclinedtobeusedasViandusedinSTART+doingstructure.Thelexicalstudyandvocabularyteachingbasedoncorpushasgreatadvantagesinthatcorpuslinguisticresearchbaseonquantitativeanalysisoflargeamountofreallanguagedata.Insteadofdependingonexperienceandintuition，studybasedoncorpuscanrevealthedifferencesofsynonymsintuitively，accuratelyandcomprehensively.References：【1】Biber.D.CorpuslinguisticsM.Beijing：ForeignLanguageTeachingandResearchPress，2000.【2】Christain，M.Gerundialcomplem
